Yeast Infection, Symptoms Worsen

Hello.  Last week I began having symptoms of a yeast infection: vaginal itching, soreness during sex, and discharge like cottage cheese.  I visited the doctor about  4 days after the symptoms started and she confirmed that it's yeast.  I completed the Monistat 3 over the counter treatment, and the infection seemed to be clearing up after the second night.  However, one day passed after finishing the product and the symptoms have begun again.  Only, this time the discharge has a foul smell to it.  Is it common for Monistat  or any over the counter treatments to not work and make symptoms worse?  I am unsure what to do as of now to cure my infection.

OMG!!!! I've been reading post after post, and I think you just answered my question!! I'm sensitive to antibiotics, etc. and got a yeast infection.... I've been through this before, but after getting rid of the yeast infection without using and sepositories (monistat, etc) by using vagisil, and azo yeast pills, , I started noticing an odor along with thick lumpy discharge! None of the itching or burning has returned, but I thought maybe I hadn't completely rid myself of the yeast infection, and have retreated myself using Monistat just yesterday..... But I have also heard that a foul odor usually indicates a differant infection than that of yeast, so I have remained worried! I have some flagyl, and if I continue to notice the problem I'll start taking it~Thanx =)

Thank you for the comment.  I did visit my doctor and she told me I became infected with Bacterial Vaginosis after treating myself for the yeast infection.  That would explain the foul, "fish-like" odor that developed.  She prescribed me metronidazole, a 7-day pill to clear up the infection.  Also, she agreed that in the future I should choose Monistat 7 over the 1 or 3 day  options, because it is indeed more effective.
