anemia?

I'm 16 and just found out I'm anemic. I was checked 2 years ago for anemia and my hemoglobin level was excellent. Now it's declined and i have all the tell-tale symptoms. I'm extremely fatigued, i'm dizzy, pale, etc etc. I've had my period every 1-2 weeks for the past 2 months. It's been really odd, they're really heavy, unpredictable, and close together. Before, you could set your calendar to it, now it's haywire. Is this a sign of a significant problem? or is it just a coincidence? are there any serious repercussions of anemia? should i go on birth control to regulate it?

I received iron as a child 30 years ago for ANEMIA for a month.  but my parents never continued the treatment.  I found out now that my iron is low 30 years later.  what are the long term effects of being anemic?  I've always had trouble concentrating in school and couldn't focus and had some vertigo
my hemoglobin is about 14 and ferritin is sometimes normal but the iron is low
I started giving myself iron dextran injections and I felt my wrists throbbing and tingling.  Can I do daily injections of 100mg/1ml?  I think I might only do once a week injections.  you might need to check your levels to be careful you don't overdose and get iron poisoning and liver failure. I also like ice and crave it.

Hey, are you sure birth control is going to fix it???
Because my period has been going on for about 2 months, and it STILL hasn't stopped. I went to see a doctor about it and we took some blood. It ended up that I am anemic. She said that if your periods have been going out of wack, then it probably means that you don't have enough nutrition (if your NOT on birth control or anything)
Oh, and talk to your doctor about the birth control stuff, I don't think using them to help regulate you period is a good idea...

Hey... Glad I could be of some help. I've heard headaches are a symptom, but I don't get them. You should bring that up with your DOC.

I found some symptoms online:

During the early stages of anemia symptoms may be lacking; and when they do appear they may be vague and confusing. Among the typical symptoms are abdominal pain, coldness, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, headache, inability to think clearly, irritability, loss of appetite, pale blue whites of the eyes, pale skin, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath during exercise, and weakness. Specific signs of iron deficiency include a strong desire to eat ice, paint, or dirt, and fingernails or toenails that break easily.

By the way.. Do you like to chew ice? I love to, and crave it & that tipped off my doc about the iron deficiency...

Hi --- I too am/was anemic. I was on iron supplements for a long time but unfortunately they didn't really do anything to help though (strangely). My body was just rejecting them... I decided to go on Seasonale because I only get a period 4 times a year, and ever since I've been on it, my levels have been up, my last blood test showed no signs of anemia... And I had been anemic for about 6 years. If you're getting your period that often I would bet that is affecting you negatively, for sure.

Your Doctor will be the best one to give you advice though of course - good luck!!!

There are different causes for anemia.  You probably had your blood checked by your doctor, so follow his advice.  Hopefully, they will not stop at just determining that you are anemic, but will try to figure out the cause.  Even though you are just sixteen, I think the birth control idea might be a good one.  I am much older than you, but it has lightened my periods so that they are hardly noticeable.  Hope you are feeling better soon!

Thanks AMA17!!!!
is it normal to get extreme headaches when you have anemia? Today, I had swim practice and we did this breath control drill. It's never given me problems before, but today I got this mindblowing headache for like 5 minutes right after the set. Could it have been because my body isnt getting enough oxygen?

thanks! I have a sheduled apppointment for next week to discuss treatment options, etc. with my doctor. My mom thinks that I should probably go on birth control to regulate my periods so they're not so intense and close together. (they think this might be the underlyng cause, but who knows at this point)

Same with Calcium, don't take it with milk. Iron is best absorbed with Vitamin C.

I agree with other poster. If you are anemic, then consult your dr. because you probabily need to get on an iron supplement. He may also be able to tell you why you are anemic. I am anemic, and take iron. Once you start the iron(if dr says it is needed) ...after a week or so, you are going to start to feel alot better..more energy etc..
Do follow directions  of pills. For instance my dr told me: about not eating certain high fiber foods right before or right after taking iron pill..because the iron can cling to the fiber and your body will not have to absorb it...that is what my dr. told me anyways.

Have you discussed this with your doctor? Are you on iron supplementation?
