blood clots during period

My 15 year old daughter has blood clots during her cycle and really bad cramps. I do NOT want to put her on the pill, do any suggestions that would help her situation. If you can let me know I would greatly apprectiate it. Thank you.

Jennifer, Since your daughter has been honest with you, I would suggest the pill to control the bleeding.  I was a heavy bleeder at 13 - I would throw up and couldn't even get out of bed.  I couldn't eat and would bleed very heavily for 7 days.  It was very difficult and hard for me: and I had not ever engaged in sexual intercourse at that point.  This has absolutely nothing to do with sexual activity but her health as a young lady and being able to have a full and enjoyable life even during her cycle.  I would definitely suggest talking with her obgyn and preparing her for the pap, which is necessary before she is put on the pill. Assure her that you trust her but want to protect her in more than one way.

i hope you find something to ease her mind or find something to help her period.. maybe you should go to the dr together and see what he/she may have in mind other than birth control... or go to a family planning or health centre, i know you can get birth control there less expensive and without paps...try and find out it would be interesting to know and could help your daughter if the dr has no other options...

something that helped the really bad cramping was the heating pads, electic or water ones.. and you can now get these thermapads for pms...you stick it on your belly and it helps alot i hear but i have never tried it...

she will eventually have to go on some form of birth control and if she is just scared of getting on the pill because of a pap test...it's not the end of the world.. if you say you have an open relationship, you could go with her...even though she isnt sexually active they will still do a pap?

I had the same thing when I was 13 years old. I had my period for 6 months straight and was having blood clots the size of a fist. I went to the Dr. they put me on a pill to stop the bleeding(it wasnt birth control). I became very anemic and had to have transfusions 3 times a week. Dont hesitate to take her to the Dr. Thats what my mom did and it was too late to take rehular medication for the anemia. I was put onto Birth control after words and the bleeding stopped.

Ah thats understandable then, they're not particularly pleasant!
Over here they don't tend to do pap smears until you're in your early 20's, but I understand that it differs in other countries. I myself haven't had a pap smear, but I have had a swab done for STD testing (not because I had an STD or even feared that I may have had one, just because I wanted to get tested).
Anyway, now I'm rambling...
But the pill is definitely something to look into if you and her are interested. Sorry I couldn't help much! :D

She is afraid of going through the whole paps smear, here she would have to do that. I have been on the pill for 14 years myself and each year when I go in for my annual I go through that not that its a big deal for me but to her it is when you've never had to experince it before. Thank you CYW and Smeeo for your suggestions.

But surely you would prefer she be on some form of birth control before she became sexually active?

Regardless of that, I know you have already stated that you do not want to put her on the pill, but I was just like her (and CYW) with my periods from the time that I started them (at the age of 13).
I would bleed for 2 weeks, then be off for 2 weeks etc. I also was passing pretty huge blood clots whenever I was bleeding, I was exhausted and suffered from incredibly painful cramps.
When I turned 15 I went to, what I believe is the equivalent of, Planned Parenthood (but over here we call it Brook). I spoke to the doctors and nurses there and decided that I wanted to go on the pill. I told my mother shortly afterwards, which was not an issue as she and I also have a very good relationship. I was just sick of my GP not taking me seriously, and to be honest, I preferred to take the situation into my own hands.

I can honestly say that it has made my life so much more bearable. I am now 19, and my periods now last approximately 3-6 days, I do not have severe pain/cramps, nor do I have excessive bleeding. There are still occasionally blood clots, but nothing compared to before.
I would highly suggest putting her on the pill, although, of course this is hers and your choice, and I think its fantastic that you have such a good relationship with her.
I have a question though, what do you mean by "she is afraid of what she has to go through to be put on the pill"?  Maybe it is different over there, but here, all I had to do was ask.

Apart from that, I really don't think there is much you can do. To ease the cramps, all I can suggest is a hot water bottle and some painkillers. I have no idea what could be done to stop the blood clots...

I do not want to put her on the pill because she is not sexually active yet. Me and my daughter have an open relationship and she comes to me when she needs something, not only that but she is afraid of what she has to go through to be put on the pill. Pap...

besides why do you not want to put your 15 year old daughter on birth control... go look on the maternal forum and the pregnancy under 18.. you will see MANY 16 year olds pregnant...so it would be safer IF ever she were to engage in intercourse-if she hasnt already!

i used to have the same thing happen to me plus i would throw up...i would have my period last 12 days then off for 7 then on again for 12.. i have had my period since i was 11 and at 13 my mom put me on the pill...the dr recommended it.. researches have found that a woman who is on the pill and isnt bleeding as much AND has shorter periods as well as less a year, shows to minimize drastically chances of cancer within the reproductive organs.

since being on the pill my periods would last about 7-9 days less cramping and less clots... and i just had a baby in sept 07 and my period has totally changed.. barely any clots, lasting 4 days...not as heavy.. not many cramps...

i would highly suggest the pill...talk to the dr though..
