I've had BV and UTI's on and off for about 7 months now.  Been on numerous courses of vaginal and oral antibiotics and it just keeps coming back.  Finally I went to see a Naturopath and she told me that BV is from our own body's natural bacteria getting out of whack due to many factors - stress, diet, hygiene, etc.  She told me to test the pH of my vagina and to use boric acid for 1 week to acidify the vagina.  The bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment.  She also told me to take acidophilus probiotics and to insert one in my vagina each night for a month.  I'm still having some symptoms but when I test the pH it seems like it is down to  the normal range.  I've read that one reason women get BV is that some men's semen is more alkaline and throws off the pH of the vagina.  It's not that the men are fooling around and passing on something.  It's just that the pH of semen affects the pH of the vagina and encourages bacteria growth.  I have an appt. with a new GYN who is a uro-gynecologist next week.  I'm curious to know if I still have BV.  Looking forward to getting another opinion because I'm still having issues but it could be due to menopause.  Good luck to you!

yeah, mine cleared right up. i asked my doctor if they needed to treat my husband since we were having sex before i knew i had it and she said there was no need because it is so rare for men to have it. it is just something caused from hormones and bacteria in your body.

I do believe men are carriers. There are some doctors that will treat men. I believe mine started after taking a long course of antibotics. I believe they cause the imbalance and once the flora is out of whack it is extermely hard for some women to get it back in balance.

i might be reading to much on the net,but everything i read is telling me when they first had sex with a new partner they got it,wich leads me to believe that a guy has sex with a girl who has it and then i believe he carries it,and gives it to the next partner. i believe from what i read once you get that bacteria imbalance you can't get rid of it,it is like herpes. i cry and told my husband that i don't know how to handle this. i only slept with 2 people my whole life and i was married to both.megancannon, did you bv go away after treatment?

i had bv after i had an iud put in. i asked the doctor if i could have gotten it from my hubby or if i could give it to him and then we'd pass it back and forth. the doctor said bv is so rare in men they don't even treat them when their partner has it. it is just caused from an imbalance of bacteria in your body. bv is only considered to possibly be sexually transmitted if you are sleeping with multiple people. i was put on flagyl and it cleared right up. i took it twice a day for 7 days. (PS i have had 3 very complicated and serious pregnancies and have several health problems so i have seen high risk obs and many specialist and they told me if you are in a relationship with one person and they are not sleeping with other people either BV does not come from sex.)

well,i dont see any improvment. i spoke to my husband and he doesn't know where it came from.i know he is very faithful. we got married a couple months ago,i had him tested before we had sex everything was negative and right after i got it. i hope i can get rid of it,i want to have a child and be normal again.smiley,i am very depressed over it and i cant stop feeling really sad.it is as bad as having an illness because it wont go.the only 2 explanations i have are my husband's ex or i did have an upper endoscopy and i could of picked it up their.i don't know but are there any other symptoms,my back is hurting me and my leg started to fall asleep when i cross them.  i always did the same thing you did, wash after i go to the bathroom, cotton panies,ect........i dont know how to get passed this and love my husband with out being sad and mad.

Hi. Sorry to hear you're going through this too. I have had BV for a year and a half now. I have been on Flagyl several times and it has never helped. I've also been on Clindamycin, Doxycyclin, Azithromycin, Keflex, Cipro, etc. etc. and have not had any relief. I also tried boric acid suppositories as someone else mentioned, but it made me spot and I had to stop treatment because it was doing something weird inside. I got a black spongy discharge from it and some mystery thing (I guess the boric acid built up? or maybe it was just the capsules they used that I was allergic to or something) had to be removed.

I take probiotics, but haven't been able to shake my BV. Every woman seems to be different though.

i am sure within myslef it was my ex. i do not have medical evidence to prove it but im sure. i was with him when i was 26 and until then i had awesome vaginal health. no complaints in any area. it all started with him.and after i stopped having sex with him and i self treated with the boric acid and i was great but i will tell youim 31 now and since then i have had it maybe once a year that my body gets of wak and i need to refresh so to speak but then i just do the boric for 2  nights. but i think that i will always kinda have it.just bcz i was great before and since then it happens about once a year. but also for the past 3 yrs after him i have a new job. im a school busdriver so i am sitting all of the day and sweating and sitting in wet which produces bacteria and provides a nice host. i asked my obgyn about the once a year occurence if it was related to bad hygiene even thought i do not my ? was am i doing something wrong and she said no. so what i do now is everytime i go to the bathroom number 1 or 2 i wash my whole area. i do this bcz i have read that when you wipe the fecal matter even though you cant see it or you wipe properly it causes bad bacteria. this process did not seem convenient at first bcz of the water but now it is second nature. also from time to toime throughout the day i use a wipe it is made by vagisil they r for sensitive skin non scented i get them at the biggest super mart lol. i get the non scented or no extra additives bcz i have read that they cause issues as well.you know perfumes. also i have thrown out all my panties and started fresh i have read over time that it just isnt clean no matter how well you wash them. i was bad like a guy it had holes and so comfy so i wanted to keep my panties hahaha. also from time to time i use cornstarch based powder to keep the are drier bcz i have read that talcum based products can lead to cancer in women and i used non scented products as well no perfumes. now on to douching i believe it is a personal choice for women to douche or not but in my opinion based on my prefernce and finding the vagina cleans itself. so i do not douch. i have read that it actually pushes and moves the good and bacteria that makes an inbalance. what got me turned on to all of these thing is when my problens started i did not have insurance and when i did go to the dr the only thing that was on the market was a prescription that was way to much money i cant remeber the name of it now but it was so expensive so i was held up to my own resources. anyway i hope this is helpful . i cant type so it is all over the place and i just type in free thought. take care.

I have had bv for over a year now and have tried the flagyl, which did not work for me. I took it three different times the last time I broke out in hives. I have had a prescription for clindamycin, but I am a little afraid of the side effects that are associated with it. I hope you have success with flagyl

i have found that bv is just an imbalance of good bad bacteria. i have had this issue before for about six months and i was wondering for the most part WHAT is that smell ? ! hahahaha. but it would come and go so i thought maybe my body was fighting it. then it remained kinda permenant as time went on meaning constant . so my friend and i were talking and she asked me if i ever had issues "there" and she started sharing that she had the same issue i did and i was so happy we were in the same boat. misery loves company. anyway she found a solution. she is a very smart cookie and did alot of research and i trust her so much. but when she told me the solution i was shocked , scared and i told her you try it first and if you are ok after then i will try it. so she tried it and she didnt start foaming at the mouth or anything and she said she was in good vaginal health so i tried it as well. ok so here goes the solution. you take gel caps the ones you can open. you can get empty ones at the health food store or you can go buy so cheap vitamins and empty and refill. they come in different sizes but let us say the normal standard size. not to tiny and not to large. then you carefully fill them with boric acid. you can fill them all the way or half way. the reason is that half way you would insert vaginally all the way in as far as you can up 2x a day or once a day for the reallly filled capsules. i like just putting once a day at night because sometimes you get leaking i dont know how else to put it so where a pad or panty liner. and one time i got like white gel discharge but all was fine. from my experince you do not need to be exact with the measurement or the boric acid in the capsule just eyeball it. when i was at my worst with bv i did this for a week. and it work like a charm. i did read that you should not do it one week before your period but i never researched that i just didnt do it. so to recap a full capsule once a day or half filled capsule twice a day. and just see how you feel you know your body and you should know how long to do it. if i feel it coming on again i may pop one full one in for one or 2 days and clears it all up. and i went to 2 different obgyns and i asked them about it. they did not deny it but they did not really comment til i pushed them bcz they want to push other drugs for sale. so it is safe! oh one more thing in my experience. i experinced a little spotting and a raw feeling inside so for myself i just gave myself the night off . also the boric acid kills the good and bad bacteria. so i would eat losts of natural yogurt and give yourself extra vagianl care. maybe no sex for a little bit so you are not allowing for unknown bacteria to enter things like this. because the funny yet sad thing was is that i think it was my boyfriend at the time giving me the bad bacteria. i didnt have intercourse with him for about 2 months and then i did again and i the bv came back but who knows lol.
