How do you know if your milk is good enough?

i have been nursing for 4 months now. And my baby seems to be picking up weight slowly. I was sick for a week adn could not produce milk and had to supplement with formula. That week he had gained 1.5 lbs. KNow that my milk supply h as come back in he has dropped 1/2 a lbs already. BUT he is more content on breast milk. So i am wondering if there is a way that i can figure out if my breast milk fatty enough, or inadiquate in anyway. I want to desperatly breast feed but if i need to put my ego aside and supplement for my babies sake i will do it. But how do i know? any suggestions?

I am so sick of every one going on and on about breast feeding it is not always the best thing sometimes it is the worst thing you can do for your baby but know one wants to talk about that fact. Your breast milk has a greater chance of cause your child to be Jaundice and the enzymes in your milk can raise their bilirubin to dangerous levels causing brain damage a fact no one will tell you and if they do its like no big deal......wake up people it is a huge deal my son is now mildly Retarded because W.I.C. and my Pediatrician told me to keep feed him while he was Jaundice he was healthy at birth. He can never live on his own or take care of himself because he is mentaly 12yrs old for life.  He has all kinds of health issues now and at age 13 had his first surgey on his heart he has since had 2 more by age 18yr and once again now back on a heart monitor and now is seeing a G.I. doc for his life long blockage problems from the Jaundice so yes breast feeding can be very very bad for your baby.

Now my grandaughter is severly under weight because every one tells her mom to keep trying it is best for her and the baby but the baby is losing weight and mom is to pridefull to give her formula and instead  lets weekin her immune system with malnutrition instead setting her up for a life time of health issues because breast feed is waht every one says is best.

If your not producing enough milk or eating right your self of can't tell if the baby has an allergy to dairy then you will hurt your baby or worse kill the baby cause you are to nieve to know when to stop and give the baby formula. People don't think they don't ask questions or have enough common sense to ask questions. You know a baby should not ever lose weight or cry non stop all day and night but you either don't care enough to get help or you should not have kids either way the baby is the one whom suffers for a life time of Stupidity on your part for not getting all the facts first.

Don't let Doctors and hospital staff or W.I.C. bully you into breast feeding  because they will only give you the positives effects of doing so and leave out that facts that can kill your child....

Ask questions get all the facts first not every woman can breast feed that is a fact so are you one of those Statistics? Make a list and check off all the questions you have asked your doctor and get answers for the ones you have not asked or got the brush off for. Its your childs life and brain are you going to let someone els be the reason why their lives are not what they could have been if you had been more aggressive in the decision making in the first place.....

Now you know use this info wisely and be prepared before this happens to you.

If my spelling is off oh well if I offended you I don't give a crap have a great day and walk away with knowledge.

Just make sure that you are drinking enough fluids and that you are eating healthy. You should be taking in 500 extra calories a day to produce enough milk. As long as you are eating good your milk should be rich in nutrients and should be enough for baby. Your pediatrician will tell you if the baby is not growing enough and if you should start supplementing. Good job on choosing to breastfeed, it is the best thing you can do for you and your baby :)
