I had an ablation.  It was a simple outpatient procedure.  So far I have not had any more periods.

It's worth a try first, if your doctor thinks it will work.  There are certain conditions that can cause heavy bleeding that are not amenable to ablation, but many are.  There are also many different types of ablation.  I had a Novasure ablation and hopefully it will work for me.  If not, it was so easy I'll probably try it again if needed.  Certainly before considering a hysterectomy I'd try everything else first.  Especially this, as it was so simple.

Your question was clear enough. who_is_this can give you more information about the ablation procedure. Hopefully, she'll see this and can help you out.

Good luck.

Are you through having children? Have you considered endometrial ablation? That's probably what your doc was referring to when he mentioned a laser. It's a less invasive procedure than a hysterectomy.
