ortho-evra

I recently tried using Ortho-evra (the patch) last week.  I put it on the night that I got my period and the next day I was very sick.  I vomited 3 times, but there was nothing in my stomach.  I was breaking into a cold sweat and shivering, but had no fever.  I'm confused though because the nurse I talked to told me not to take off the patch and go to the ER because it was probably a virus that I had caught at the ER a few days ago (i also sprained my ankle).  After vomiting again (sorry to get so graphic) I was so frustrated that I just took off the patch and within 30 minutes I was fine!!  I'm still not sure what it was, but I know one of the side effects of ortho-evra is vomiting, yet the nurse said that it shouldn't make you vomit because it's going through your skin and not directly into your stomach... ???... so really... I'm not sure whether to just go on the pill or try again...  I'm really afraid to try again because I don't want to feel all that again, and I also read that it actually could cause more clotting than the pill... what should i do??

Sorry it's so long.... had to get this out...

I think the birth control w/more estrogen in them have a way to make you nausuas(sp) Correct me if Im wrong...  The make lots of different birth controls bc everyone is different.  Speak w/ur doc about the symptoms ur having & it make take a few tries b4 you find something that agrees w/you. I was the same way.. All pills made me sick so I tried the nuvaring & it has the least amount of side effects.

I agree with the others. There's NO way you could take off the patch and be fine 30 minutes later, if it really were a reaction to the hormones. I think you probably just had a virus, and the timing was just a coincidence. I'd give it another try.

There was another woman on here a while ago that said when she put the patch on it burned like crazy and she couldn't stand it and had to take it off.

Although your reaction sounds extreme and uncommon, I think it's very possible the patch made you do that.  Especially since you took it off and were suddenly fine.

You should try it one more time because it could have been a fluke.  Another option to consider is the nuva ring.  It's the same concept - weekly administration of bc instead of daily pill taking.

Good luck!

what is it that gives you these side effects??  Is it really the hormones or is it like the nurse said "because it being absorbed through the stomach"??  if it is the hormones... then wouldn't ANYTHING i try, whether it be the patch or pill, give me these side effects??

Could be side effects of the patch but taking it off and 30mins you were fine?  The hormones wouldnt leave ur body in 30mins. If you dont feel safe using it try another form..  I use nuva ring & it has the least amount of side effects. Talk to ur GYN about other forms of birth control..Good Luck
