You may want to look into Polycystic Ovarian syndrome commonly know as PCOS. I happen to have PCOS and this is a very weird and sometimes depressing syndrome to deal with. Every women has cysts on her ovaries, but poly means multiple. In this case many. They make your ovearies look like a smokers lungs. Yuck...I once was on my period for 2 years! dr prescribed BC for one week. Which did stop the bleeding and put me on a normal cycle 9-10 days a month. (periods with pcos are often longer and heavier) About 4 months later it happened again. So I went on BC for like 6 months straight and that was about 4 years ago and my cycle is just starting to act up again. There are several different reasons why your period may be spotting or long. I also have fibroids. Fibroids form on the uterine walls (or somewhere around there) but the main point is that they grow and and sometimes out grow their blood supply. When this happens the burst (if you will) and your period is longer and heavier. During the time that they are growing your period may skip. When they burst the period is longer thatr normal. I have also learned that this may also cause your eggs during ovulation to fall in partial pieces. This can also be related to the thyroid gland. And when that is not funtiontioning correctly it throws everything off. There are so many turns to this syndrome. But what it comes down to is there is a hormone that is not being secreted, (similar to when women go through menopause)So you may want to ask your doctor about ortho-tricycline lo. I could go on and on because it has so many different side effects. So just google it and ask your OBGYN a little more about it. Hope things go better for you.
Thanks for all of your advice. I enjoyed reading it. I've been to dr's for about 7 years now trying to figure something out. As a usual first treatment, I was put on a low dose bcp-alesse?sp. I have had bad migraines since the birth of my first child so they won't try a stronger one. I was on the bcp's for about 6 months. No change, still a period every 2 weeks. My pap's have all been good. I have a paraguard IUD, but these problems happened 4years before the IUD. I have recently located out of state and found a new gyn. I had an us done and it showed the lining of the uterus to be just fine. No other findings other than the iud was in place. She would not mention doing any bloodwork other than thyroid and I assume that is ok because they have never called me about it. She did mention that I may consider changing to a mirena iud-which has the hormones injected in it. But she couldn't guarantee a worsening of my migraines-I get optical ones and then have temporary blindness usually in one eye, but sometimes both and n/v. I'm about at my wits end. I am overweight and have been exercising and dieting. But I've read some info on low progesterone or estrogen dominance and I had a lot of those symptoms. I wish it was easy. Thanks again and sorry about the rambling on and on.tmv
Oh, sorry, one more thing. I did take depo-provera about 13 years ago for one or two shots only. No surprise, I had constant bleeding! Could this have screwed things up so bad even now or is it normal changes in my hormones with age, but I'm only 36 and that would mean it all started at 23??
