why did I have spotting 4 days before my period, and then a light brown period

I am wondering if this could be pregnancy related.  I had spotting 4 days before my period that lasted half a day.  Then I started my period when it was due that was only 2 1/2 days . My period was brown/black with red at times..very light for me. Normally my periods last 5 days and are heavy.  My 2 previous pregnancies I had spotting, but it was only before my period was due.. my period is very regular and predictable,  this time it's way off!

I had this happen to me once when I was around 13.  I am 28 now but I remember it because it was alarming.  Brown blood means blood that has been oxidized.  Obviously your body has expelled your endometrium or parts of it internally but it's only just starting to come out of your body.  Unless you have a positive test I doubt you are pregnant.

Well that does sound rather strange. Did you do a pregnancy test? I think you should. If it is negative, visit your gyno.
