Drugs I will be taking

My new Rheumatologist is very interested in treating me. He was compassionate, and curious, and thorough.
He asked good questions.
He told me to stay on 20mg Prednisone for the time being. I will start Plaquinyl (400mg/day) for 6 months. Methotrexate (6 2.5mg tablets orally once a week) for 6 months. Folic Acid & Vitamin C and he wants me to keep up with Omega 3, Vitamin D and the Pro-biotics. I will get my current lump aspirated by my surgeon on Monday.
When my symptoms first presented I had a terrible cold. It got so bad that while I was getting my Mastitis looked at by the nurse, I asked her to listen to my lungs, and she immediately perscribed an antibiotic for my caugh. The breast surgeon switched it, since she wanted to address the Mastitis. I ended up needing a Z pac to get rid of the caugh. No one ever figured they were connected...but I always mention it. This doctor thinks they are intimately connected.
Gotta go, I will write more tomorrow.

thanks for the response. My rheumatologist wants to start me on Prednisone as soon as my blood work gets clear. I have low Vitamin D and she wants that to improve before starting me on Prednisone, to minimize negative side effectr (osteoporosis), and wants to treat me with INH for about a week (had postive skin test 6 years ago), However, I deveoped hives after taking the meds for 3 days.  So, I am waiting to see the Rheumatologist again to see how we can proceed.

I would even go so far as to say I have NO side effects. I managed to go thru summer without getting sunburned at all...even though I have exposure. No sore in my mouth as of yet. And no nausea to speak of. I am down to 7.5 mg of prednisone, and I have not noticed any flare-up of symptoms yet. I expect to be prednisone free by November 1.

Did you have less side effects with the Methorexate than the prednisone?

Check up with the Rheumatologist today. I am happy to report that all of my blood work came back clean and normal. He is very happy with the progress being made. Things are softening and looking cleaner every day. We are starting a slow weaning on the prednisone. I am doing well with the Methotrexate Folic Acid and Plaqinim and all the vitamins. I am looking forward to losing the prednisone puff that is developing around my face. All and all I am feeling really good about the plan.
Hope everyone is having similar good experiences this summer. The lack of activity on the furum gives me hope.

The predniesone is also used for treatment in severe coughs and anti-inflammatory bronchial problems.    I am happy to hear that your cough has virtually cleared up.  Get lots of rest when you have GM but, that's harder to do when you have a cough, isn't it.
My suregeon said that she has seen 4 cases in the past 25 years and just recently heard of another case in our city of about 300,000.   So, why is more not being looked into?
I was in the wait and see group as well we should be but, for how long.    I hope that your prescribed treatment plan works.
   Take care,
             Pat

Once the z pac took affect, I haven't had a caugh to speak of. Since my first dose of Prednisone, and starting pro-biotics, I haven't even been "under the wheather". Just these persistent abcesses. It is really too bad the HIPPA is the way it is. I had a lump aspirated yesterday. The Radiologist said he has seen 2 other cases of GM in our area this year, and about 5 others before coming to our area. He wanted to make sure I did not let anyone talk me into surgery. We had a good talk about my chosen treatment plan. He is definately of the "wait and see" rather than drugs or surgery type of plan. None of this information can be shared, of course, and he is just a staff person, not having his own client load. I will tell my surgeon about him, since technically he works for the same people, but WHERE WAS HE when she was asking for imput about this disease. I am guessing she was only asking Surgeons.

Hi:
When ever I had a lump forming whether it was infected or not (usually was)....I had a terrible cough.   The allergist at the astham clinic told me that when the body has an infection,  it will cause flare ups of asthma.  Have you been diagnosed with asthma, bronchiatis or other respiratory ailments?
I hope that you're feeling better soon.

I'm so glad u found a great rheumatologist that u like. It makes such a difference. I'm taking 10mg prednisone and folic acid daily and take 3 2.5 mg tablets once a week of methotrexate but go Monday to adjust those to lower the prednisone and up the methotrexate .  I have been on them about 4 months and the plan is to go off prednosone by 6 months and let the methotrexate do the heavy lofting and be on it about a year if not longer. Ive been lucky and as much as o hate tge side effects they are livable and could be worse. No miracles but my gm has improved some at least how often i have had to get drainings so om optimistic. Keep us updated i hope u get some improvement. I've never heard of the other one u mentioned but I will look it up.
