The problem with just getting them drained is that skin heals faster than tissue; so while the site appears "healed", it isn't, and instead you have a full tract from the site of the abscess to the skins surface.
If I have anything medically drained, it's from my surgeon, not normal doctor, and it's done as a surgical in-clinic procedure (they have a separate room, forms etc for this); and it's lanced and I have tubes placed - to keep the area open, not for draining purposes. Drains stay in for up to a couple weeks (depending on how deep the area was lanced) and then switches to having it packed (usually by my surgeon for the first couple weeks) and then when the area is more shallow, I can pack it myself at home.
Surgeon doesn't want to drain mine because he feels any poking around or messing with the breast will just make it worse. I've had the same abscess drain for almost 2 months now but can't get it to heal. Any suggestions on getting it to heal on its own?
I was going at one point on a weekly basis to have mine drained. Becauase of the inflammation a local was not effective, the last time I had it done under local was sooo painful, so traumatic, I told my doctor I could never do that again. She was traumatized by the experience through my pain as well. At that hospital outpatient procedures like I was having done in the area of the hospital that I was having it done could not use anything stronger than local anesthesia for the patients during the procedure. My doctor rewrote that policy for me so that I was able to receive a medication that produced conscious sedation, I was awake but not aware, she also gave fentanyl IV prior to the procedure. I would wake up minutes after the procedure was done a little achy but that's all.
Thanks both I guess I will also do this pop some painkillers Ibuprofen or something to let go the pain coz it become very unbearable after the procedure. It is my 2nd time so hopefully it should be ok as i had a biopsy also at the same time after the accesses removal. Thanks for the tip both. Hope you both feel better too.
I had mine drained by fine needle without ultrasound, and they did local anesthesia.I got tired of going to Doctor every week to have my abscess drained so I decided to let the abscesses open on their own; the abscess will be draining from a little wound, until it heals.
Pain stills there, but not all the time I just take Ibuprofen 400mg when it really hurts...apart of that I am drugs free right now.
Hope this helps!
I know that it is painful. I had that happen to me a few times. I took Avil about 30 mins prior to any procedure to reduce the inflammation. If I had an open wound, the nurse would drip lidocaine in the opening...this helped the most.
