Diet for Vitamin D

Hi all,

This week I had an unexpectedly positive re-test result - my levels had gone from 20nmol to 109nmol (If you are working in ng/ml, those figures would be approx 8ng/ml to 43ng/ml) in the space of just over two months.

I'm not sure the extent to which this can be attributed to the changes I have made in my diet, but thought I would share them with the forum in case anyone was interested...

The recommendations come from 'The Vitamin D Cure' by James E. Dowd. He goes into great detail about exact portions for your body weight etc. that I can't reproduce here but, anyway, I have  just adopted the broad principles for myself.

The basic idea is to greatly reduce acidity in your diet.

The 'no go' foods are: Cheese, salt (added to food), bread, cereal, pasta i.e. grains

The foods you need to increase are: leafy green vegetables, lean protein, eggs, fruits (especially bananas). Also nuts in moderation

There are two simple rules: 1. Eat mostly from two food groups i.e. lean meat & fresh produce 2. Consume three times as much fresh produce as lean meat (3:1 produce to protein)

Typically, I have been eating:

- Live natural yoghurt with two desert spoons of flax seed plus crushed walnuts, almonds and a grilled banana
- Chicken breast or smoked mackerel with spinach, watercress, rocket, walnuts, cherry tomatoes, raisins
- Pork with greens, lentils & potatoes (with skins on)
- Omelette made with three eggs (one yolk), spinach, a little bacon, onions and tomato with salad leaves
- No alcohol (I don't drink anyway)
- Minimal caffeine (only 1 cup of  tea per day - not easy for an English woman!)

Hope that is of interest!

Yes, I love London too - so frustrating I can't make the most of it right now... too exhausted most of the time. We're in North-West London, not far from Notting Hill, which I am sure you would have visited?

I guess most people with VDD come from more northerly climes!

Alifogg: well hello from Seattle! It's actually very pretty right at the moment. Sunshine even! I'm north of Seattle (Edmonds)... Not too far from Issaqua :)
Where in England are you? I lived in London for a year ( many years ago ) and LOVED it. We
were in Dulwich, but saw quite a bit while we were there.

I also have been vdd for years. It was, of course,
undiagnosed until November last year. Felt like I was dying, etc..so thank you for the diet info and the hopeful news!

Very interesting! I was going to start gluten free today, to see if it helped my bowel-symptoms - but now I'll definitely try following these guidelines for a while! I guess I'll have to buy lots of bananas, eggs and chicken filet (more than usual) - LOL.
Also, I 'm glad that yoghurt and milk are still good - I'll have yoghurt with nuts, and still enjoy my chocolate milk.. ;)

Feeling energized and positive sounds wonderful - I'm so happy for you :)

Well, I do get terrible intermittent flare ups of my symptoms but in between those, I feel really good - energized and positive - in a way that I haven't for years (I believe my levels started to fall several years ago). I certainly attribute some of that to diet.

How's the weather in Seattle at the moment? I am very familiar with that beautiful part of the world as my in-laws are in Issaquah.

Interesting, thanks! How do you feel on this diet?
I have noticed that I feel better when I do low carb. Wonder if there is enough similarity in the diets that I become more acidic.
Again, congratulations on the nice increase!
