Hair dry and thinning? Tinnitus? And a bit of my story.

I was just dx with low D of 19.  I have many of the symptoms as everyone here which also looks like hypothyroid symptoms.  Had thyroid test TSH, FT4, FT3, antibodies all normal but FT3 low in range and TSH was high once during the 2 times I took these tests.  Both doctors said not a thyroid problem.  I ask one of the doctors if he thought it could be a vitamin problem and he said no "Vitamins are in our food and added to everything so no it wouldn't be a problem."  I was shocked to hear him say that and disagreed, I knew some people have problems absorbing vitamins and had just started researching on vitamin D. He sent me on the way ran a few more blood work tests,  they came back normal.  Note at bottom of lab results said "Don't know what is causing her varied sx's.  Cannot think of any other specific tests that I would order."   Well I didn't go back to him and I changed yet to another doctor, she did test for Ferritin, and B-12 which was normal,  I asked about Vit. D and she said she doubt that it was a cause but will put in for it.  BINGO!  I was low at 19.  So glad now after reading everyone's symptoms that I asked to be tested.  I go back to see what she is going to have me do to bring D up,  lol wish me luck.  I'm wondering though....has anyone had very dry and thinning hair?  Did it get better?  Also if you had tinnitus (ear ringing)  Did it go away when your D levels came up?

Hi Miked82,

Thank you so much for responding.  I hope my hair problem is the Vit. D and will go away.  Around the crown of my head is the most dry and the ends of my hair look like a fish hooks, and lost some hair at the temples which has never fully came back.  I haven't done anything different over the years with styling so really never thought it was do to damage and besides I've always been careful, then I finally found out about Vit D being low so I wonder if this was the problem.  I do also have problems with my nails.  They split and break easy, thin, peel/dry looking at the tips a little and have vertical ridges in them.  I also have brain fog, can't concentrate, forgetful, not sleeping well, no energy, low to no libido, achy neck in front, sore neck and shoulders, light headaches,  a little nausea, lightheaded, 2 times I had vertigo, tinnitus (ear ringing), sore wrests and fingers, muscle spasms in arm, light depression, light anxiety etc, to name a few lol.  Some of this stays and some come and go. Have good days and bad. But I do have to say I'm not as bad as some that I have read on here, at least I do have good days.  I feel like, at times, it's all in my head when I have good days but then the bad days come around and I say nope something is wrong.  And now I'm rambling on...is that a symptom too?  lol  I'm joking now, today is a good day so far.  All I know is I'm tired of this and am looking for answers.  Thanks again Miked82 for sharing.  Hope you feel better soon.  Oh and you might want to change your profile to say female.  hehe   Take care!

Hi Tiredsleepymama,

I had VDD. was tested in Dec 2013 and it was 11 ng. which is really low. I am a male. I had dry and thinning hair, scaly skin. I guess the deficiency developed over 3 years but the last year was the worst where I got the dry thinning hair, also lost some hair and hair and nails were growing very slow. other symptoms: loss of appetite, depression, headaches. concentration problems, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, low libido. supplemented for 2 months with 10k D3 everyday. then I stopped when my levels reached 45 ng because I started to get a rash from vitamin D3. Just go in the sun daily for at least 15 mins and drink milk fortified with vitamin D and weekend by the beach. so far the concentration problem/headache/depression resolved. muscle weakness is better but not really recovered. appetite better but not back to normal. rest of symptoms including dry hair is still there but at least is back to growing. recovery is usually slow per the other posts and it can take 6-12 for complete recovery. so yeah dry thinning hair could be related to vitamin D. I think also several people reported ear ringing as a sign of VDD. I got kind of blocked ear feeling with VDD which is more irritating. I am 3 months and probably still need more time to heal. Make sure to drink milk to get calcium with vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is horrible in the symptoms and affects multiple parts of the body. good luck
