vitamin d

WOW.
I have exactly the same symptoms as all of you and my vitamin d levels are 10ug/L which is extremely low...

I'm all alone on this. I will start to take 2,000mg of vitamin d and see what happens!

Welcome to the forum! :)

Reading the symptoms lists in here sure is surreal, right? I felt like that too when I first discovered this forum - because I felt very very alone with this condition, my doctor didn't know much, and it was just such a relief to find people in the same situation.

I only heard of D-levels being written as nmol/L or ng/ml - the first one is used here, and I've seen the second one is used in the US. So I don't really know what 10 ug/L would equal?
Many people in here have been very low, and I'm afraid I have to tell you that healing takes time - but starting supplements sure is a step in the right direction ;)

2000 IUs might be a little low if you want your levels to rise fast, but some people can't take higher doses - maybe you'll start there and as soon as you feel comfortable you can increase?
I reckon it is D3 you are taking?
I also recommend sun - I don't know where you live, but here in Norway we don't have 'd-effective' sun yet, so I actually use UV-beds twice or three times a week (5-7 mins. each time). UV induced D lasts longer in the body than supplement D, and it is also impossible to overdose with UV ;)

I wish you a good and fast recovery, and I hope we get to follow your process in here :)

I second everything 9na said...I'd like to add that you should try to increase your dose of D3 to at least 3000 or 4000 IUs...do it gradually if you want to make sure you tolerate it well. Also, it's best to take D3 in gel cap form and with a fat (nuts, cheese, a meal) to absorb it optimally....I found it worked best for me to divide my dose in 3, for example, I currently take 2400 IUs with breakfast, 1000 IUs with lunch, and 1000 IUs with dinner. (I'm waiting for my next blood test and if I've plateaued I'll up my dose further from 4400IUs daily to 5400IUs daily). My levels didn't go up significantly until I started taking 2000 IUs daily/gel caps/ religiously...Good Luck!!! You're not alone. You have all of us and your levels WILL go up and you WILL feel better just stick with it!!!...Phyllis

The Vitamin D Council actually recommends that healthy adults take 5,000 iu vitamin D3 everyday.  Therefore, since you are severely deficient, like I was and must stay on guard so I won't be again, you can safely take the minimum of 5,000 iu everyday and then some.  Seriously, everyone on this forum would benefit by signing up for the newsletters from this website.  It is where I learned how important it is to take magnesium in particular with vitamin D in order to get the most benefit from the vitamin D supplements.  You should be able to find some archived newsletters on the site, too.  Just Google "Vitamin D Council".

It is a good idea to build up to it, as the above post says.  Some people, especially people with autoimmune issues, are particularly sensitive to vitamin D supplements.  I've been fortunate in this regard, considering what my chronic conditions are.  Not everyone can build up as fast as I did.  And, I know someone who still can barely take 400 iu everyday, but she does have an autoimmune illness, too.  So, definitely follow the suggestions that work for you that help you to build up tolerance if you find the supplement hard to tolerate.

Definitely check out the Vitamin D Council website, though.  Magnesium is the most critical mineral to take with your vitamin D.  I've been taking my magnesium separately from my calcium, as this is what my neurologist told me to do.  He says that the calcium is still important, but it's important to take these separately from each other because the body's system that synthesizes one depletes the other.  This is worth noting for others dealing with vitamin D deficiency and recovery, since magnesium is the key element to getting the most out of your vitamin D supplements.  And, I'm only talking about the ordinary RDA amount of magnesium, too.

Since vitamin D deficiency nearly killed me, I'm definitely staying vigilant about keeping track of what is going on with my levels.  I had a neighbor dealing with a virus.  I gave her some of my vitamin D and gave her the advice I learned on the Vitamin D Council's website of taking 10,000 iu everyday while fighting a virus.  She got over the virus quickly and thanked me for helping her.  The general population still isn't completely aware of how important their vitamin D levels are.  Most people are actually somewhat deficient, so taking the 10,000 iu everyday for a healthy person who can tolerate that level is not too much just while fighting a cold or flu virus.  They should not take that much all the time, just while fighting the virus.  It's good information to have during cold and flu season.

What do you recommend as the appropriate amount of magnesium to take daily? Thanks

I'm not FurballsMom, but this page talks about magnesium dosage :) http://www.easy-immune-health.com/magnesium-dosage.html

I also find the easy immune health-page very informative on many aspects of vitamin D and deficiency, by the way.

God, I love this forum!
Welcome welcome welcome! I agree with everything said above and add that 10,000 iu/day is safe. It is the maximum daily that one should take and as someone said you might want to work up to it. I dove right in and had no problems, but some people don't tolerate it as well. D3 in a dry formula is your best bet.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but it bears repeating anyway: be aware that not only will it take 3-6 months to get your numbers up and start feeling better, but also the progress often feels just as bad as before. As the body heals it actually hurts so stick with it no matter what! We have all experienced this and it helps to know before hand, I think.

Again, welcome!!

Anne

Ps 300 is the max magnesium/day I'm pretty sure. Too much will give you the runs :)

Hey guys, you're fantastic! Can you Imagine where I am from? Portugal! I have great sun for free, but I went through hell in the last years, paxil and diazepam withdrawal that have stolen my life. I spent 3 or more years bedridden and I am now feeling a bit better and overcoming that issue very slowly., I'm more than 4 years off meds. It has been a total nightmare.

I am now focused on improving my vitamin D levels which i found out being terribly low.

withdrawal made me very sensitive to meds and supplements and that is the mais reason i am going to start on 2,000iu D3 (Natural factors, is it good?)

10ug/L is equivalent to 10ng/ml from what I've read.

I feel back pain, i feel sick, my ast/ggt/alt levels are high, I feel weak, tired, dizzy, fear, difficulty walking, dancing, talking, laughing, swallowing, singing.

I hope you'll be here to help me along this journey, another one :)

I tried to answer all of your questions, i really thought i wasn't going to be read!

thank you friends!

Wow, you have already suffered so much! It seems really unfair that you have to fight another battle.

Good thing is, when you feel ready for it - about 20 mins. of sun on your body induces about 10 000 IUs of D3 in your body! So if you have lots of sunny days, you barely need supplements actually (but I urge you to take supplements as well, being so low!).
Starting on 2000 IUs sounds good. I'm not familiar with the brand, but basically if it's D3, it's good. I've been taking D3 in gel cap form until now, but I recently bought some dry formula ones. Just because I might react to the oil in the gel caps, not because they are more effective ;)'

10 ng/ml sure is low! But many people in here have been as low, some even lower. I started at about 12-13 ng/ml myself (31 nmol/L), and next week I'm going to be retested - excited to see how much my level has improved.

Your symptoms sound very familiar! I have most of them myself, and I gain new ones all the time, even though I am supposed to be healing.. :p Strange condition, this VDD - the healing process is just as bad as the original condition, really.. (And since it takes time for the D level to improve, we're still deficient for a long time into the recovery, I guess...)

But we'll be here for you, friend, and cheer you on until we've all recovered! :)

9na :)

From what I've read people increase their levels but the symptoms maintain, is it true?

Yes, it seems it takes the body way longer to recover than for the blood to reach better D-levels.
Here's a link saying a bit on recovery time, and apart from that the healing process seems to be very individual... I wish i could give you (and myself) more accurate information on this, but I'm afraid that doesn't exist...

Well, actually, with the magnesium, the amount one tolerates tends to vary.  I would recommend asking your doctor or nutritionist the maximum amount.  However, I do know that you can definitely take much more than 300, unless you are prone to diarrhea.  My neurologist has me taking a MINIMUM of 400 mg/day.  I do know that one can take 1,000 mg or more, but the trick is not to go overboard.  Not only do you not want to get diarrhea from it, but you also don't want to take so much that you end up depleting the calcium in your bones.  If 1,000 mg is too much for you, start with half that much, because at least that will be enough to help with your vitamin D levels.  If you're prone to constipation, you will likely do better with 1,000 mg.  Don't take more than this without advice from your doctor.  At a separate time of the day, take an equal amount of calcium.

I second everything 9na wrote :)

Vdd has sooooo many symptoms! I'm pretty sure it's mostly because d is a hormone (prohormone) and not a true vitamin.

Thankfully we are all healing 'together' :)

I understand your question - I think we all could use some more success-stories in here. But as it is a slow recovery I guess it is harder to see it, and I also believe that many former sufferers forget about this forum when they are all better - understandable, really.

But check Phyllis' thread here: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/recovery-after-vitamin-D-deficiency/Vitamin-D-level-hits-41-and-I-feel-great/show/1452772

My supplements arrived today.

When is the best time to take vitamin d3?

There is no established best time to take it. However what works best is to take your supplements with a meal. I take my D3 gel cap supplements 3 times a day -- 2400 IUs with breakfast, 1000 IUs with lunch and 1000 IUs with dinner. (D3 is best absorbed by the body when taken with a fat and our meals contain fats). It took me about 7 months to get my levels in the 40s; I'm currently feeling great but would like to get my levels even higher since it seems the higher my levels go the more of my symptoms disappear and the better I feel.Phyllis

It's really great to know you're feeling so much better!!!

What were your original symptoms and where have you improved?

You can read my list of symptoms on the symptom thread: Vitamin D deficiency symptoms. It's on this page. Virtually all have resolved or diminished. Of course, I still have back problems and migraines, though the migraines may have diminished in frequency not sure yet.

I started 1000iu d3 this week and the first 3 days i felt a bit jittery for 30minutes after taking the d3. Now i feel my body is getting used to it, no symptoms at all for now, i feel calmer, hope it works guys!

Good luck!!!! However, I think you'll find you'll need to work yourself up to more than 1000 IU daily...I'm on 4400 IUs daily but it took me awhile to gradually work up to this dose. I accidentally took an extra 1000 IUs today and experienced the D3 jitters again myself!!!!...It
WILL work, be patient. Phyllis
