can't open my mouth after wisdom teeth extraction

I have 5 teeth pulled out on Aug 6th (four wisdom, one fractured).  Now the bruise and the swollen has gone.  But every time I try to open my mouth, the right side of my mouth would be very hurtful.  Now I can only open my mouth to the degree that to put one finger between the upper and the down sides of my teeth.  Any wider than that would cause a lot of pain in the right side of  mouth.

I'm still taking antibotietics every day.  Could u tell me what might happened and what shall I do?  p.s.  I just moved to a different city than the one I took the surgery,  so it's hard to find the original doctor to do a follow up test

well a year ago i got one impacted wisdom out and after i couldnt open my jaw for 3 months for more then 2 fingers. i just got another out and i already cant open my jaw again. the dentist says that alot of people in the world have a bite that is off which throws off your jaw muscles so when you keep your mouth open for too long or fuss with the nerves they will act up. he also said that being tense would case it as well. i oput ice and heat on it and massage where they comment and eveeryday i try to push it a little futher. seems to be working. i am a singer and i need to be able to open my mouth to make money so... but it just a waiting game.   last time this happened i went in every wekk to tell them that i still couldnt open my mouth and they checked on me and told me to wait for it

Hi is your mouth okay now? I have this situation right now u got my wisdom tooth pulled last november and until now i cant open mouth ,i can only manage to open at the size of my finger but only put my finger flat.and still swollen and pain.i already go to different doctor and they did a panorama and this looks normal.im quite desperate because its not easy to put the spoon with food in it.please ill wait for your reply thank you!
Hi, has it gotten any better for you? You want to make sure that when this issue occurs that you see your dentist right away in most cases after wisdom teeth extractions trismus occurs where you would need to put moist hot compressions on the area of pain for 15-20min for an hour 4 times throughout your day massage your jaw joint and jaw exercises rinsing with warm salt warm holding it in your mouth for a few minutes on the area causing the issue gently propping your mouth open with something soft or popsicles Sticks over a period of time. This should hold you over until you can get to a medical professional to make sure all is well and to diagnosed properly

2 weeks ago my doctor took out my wisdom tooth and after the procedure I was not able to open my mouth to its full potential I can only open it about one cm wide and the whole right side of my face hurts when I try to open my mouth fully. My doctor wants to put me to sleep to correct the problem. I'm just kind of nervous as to what he's going to do.. Do you think this is a good idea? Also what do you think cause the problem in the first place? Could it be nerve damage? Thanks for your time!

Three days ago I had one impacted wisdom tooth removed. The jerk dentist did not clean the infection out and sewed me up saying once the tooth was gone the infection would go away by its self. No need for antibiotics. Four days later....my gums are infected. But yes, my jaw is stiff, still bleeding in stitches as well. Rinse with 1 teaspoon of salt in an 8oz. glass of water...four to five times a day, for 30 seconds each time...it helps heal and reduce swelling. After 4 days..begin to do jaw excersises....moving jaw right to left 10 times...slowly...then open and closing jaw 10 times....maybe 4 times a day.

I had the same thing done 2 weeks ago. it gets better...like 5% a day.
use ice packs, don't use any heat on face, no hot showers, till the swelling comes down, put your head up and sleep, coz pressure causes more bleeding and swelling.
the headaches will be less if you sleep with your head up...but they do go down..i promise.
i think 3 weeks should do it. good luck.

I would talk to the surgeon as soon as you can. Numbness can occur but they know best and why its happening.

During the surgery, the mouth gets open very wide and its held like that for a period of time and puts some stress on the jaw joints. They are also pulling the teeth out which puts more pressure on the jaw (i won't give more details), but there is a lot of pressure. This can aggrivate the jaw muscles and ligaments holding your jaw in place that allow it to open and close. This FREQUENTLY occurs, but should resolve with REST. The muscles can respont to heat or ice whatever feels better. Usually though, with swelling, you want to put ice on for 15 mins and then take it off for a while, then reapply.

If its quite sore, you should talk to them about what you can do to remedy that, or take over the counter medications at your discretion.

question/comment: if you grind your teeth, this could also be a problem and is making the above situation worse, so if you know you do that, mention that to your doctor. If you can't contact your surgeon, see a dentist! they can get you to the right people!

PS: stress, eating hard foods/types you have to chew lots, laughing/emotions, all use those muscles that are sore or tight, so try to limit those things in your life and take it easy for a while.

WARNING! I'm sure you have already resolved this issue, hopefully, but I must share my experience with those that may be googling their symptoms and see this post.

This happened to me after my wisdom teeth were removed.  I couldn't open my mouth and it was very difficulty to swallow.  There was way too much swelling.  GO TO AN ORAL SURGEON immediately.  It was almost too late for me.  They have to fly me via helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical center for emergency surgery.  I almost died.

Get a professional - an oral surgeon or emergency room (to check your WBC and get a CAT scan)!!  I hope this helps someone ...

I had this happen to me when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. My suggestion is to not worry about it too much. Rest your jaw and put heat on it. My jaw actually came apart finally after that surgery when I was singing along with the radio. I remember it had been locked for quite some time, like a week. Don't panic too much!
