What's going on?!

I was given I 131 on Sept. 2 2009. Here it is Sept 12th, and I have a constant metal taste in my mouth, and I am so so tired!!!! I had a total thyroidectomy in June of 2009 for Thyroid Cancer. Can the I 131 still be affecting me? I feel like I have thrush in my throat too. Is that from the I131 treatment? I also have MS. Does that figure into the equation? I am a masters degree student ( at 44 years old) and I can't get anything done because I am so tired!!!!!HELP!!!!!!!

I too had the metallic taste but I had it before RAI when I was hyper.
The thick saliva is a HYPO sign after RAI.
The aching and toiredness is also HYPO (as you probably already know).
I think we also tend to be 'mentally tired' as we know the worst is over.
The lead up to RAI is in itself a big mental 'rush' and we tend to come 'down' more when it is over.
Usually the Endos/Docs wont give you replacement meds until they know for sure that the RAI is out of your body so that it wont send you drug induced hyper.
Usually the thyroxin is given when your TSH is around 6.0.
Any earlier than that can bring on thyroid storm (even though no thyroid) as the iodine content takes at least 90 days to be 100% out of your body from RAI.

The taste buds thing is a classic as you feel hungry and when you do eat...it tastes like cardboard lol.
That too , along with the metallic taste does subside over the next few weeks.
Just keep drinking plenty of water.
I found with the dry mouth and thick saliva that lemons were the best.
Not nice but boy, did they boost up the taste buds lol!

The thrush is a sign of going HYPO too.
And your Doc can prescribe a lozenge for you to suck on.
I swore I had thrush but when cultures came back (mouth swabs) there was no infection.
It was in actual fact....going HYPO.

Hope that helps :)

I had no taste for about 1 month after RAI, then had the metallic  taste for quite some time. I also had swollen saliva glands about 6 months after RAI, and that lasted for a couple of months.  I now do not produce enough saliva and find chewing some foods difficult, so always have water  with food.

Hi,
Are you on meds now?  I was just given a 150-160 millicurie dose on 9/11 and am extremely tired.  I do not have any meds until after the WBS on 9/17.  My endo insists on that and not sure why--I want my thyroid medication so I can begin to feel normal.  Eyelids are extremely heavy!!  I haven't had the metallic taste yet, but my saliva is very thick.  I tried sucking on lemon drops but with the radiation everything I have been eating is just distasteful.  I am still on the LID from hell.

As I understand, the 131 treatment can have lasting effects months later.  I've seen other posts regarding the thrush.  Seek those out.

Good luck to you and us all going through RAI for cancer.

Oh yes - I totally understand and YES that metal taste can linger.

Mine was a year or so.

I'd have your levels checked - if you feel that bad with tiredness - something is off.
