What in the world ? I am not a Dr. ...

My Dr. is weird and neglecting me  and I am having to play Dr. now since I cant go anywhere.
I took my Fentanyl patch off days ago. I can't see with it on and I am in college. I told him this. But he didnt want me to take it off.  He said wear a bandaid under half of it.
I said again, no, I am on an acedemic scholarship and I have no time for trial and error so can we do something else so I can walk to school and sit down longer than 5 minutes so I can concentrate. ( because I had just failed an exam due to blurred vision for a week straight.)   Here is why I am writing.... I have been up for 4 days straight. I want to jerk my arms back and forth and I am stretching my hamstrings, my muscles feel really weird. I want to sleep.  My Dr only ignores me so am I left for dead ? I need a caring Dr. like right now. I cant drive, I am just sitting at home really hoping this has nothing to do with the patch. I will never wear one again. I wore it for 2 weeks.

We all would like an explanation for the, "out of Fentanyl, Docs out of touch" statement.

Narcotics, in the hand and body of some is or can be, tantamount to a driven need to build on their need with more of, or other drugs in this catagory. As mentioned, if a Doctor does not, or refuses to hear complaints, we must ask, why is that? Each case is different, and each PT, as well. If one is not satisfied w/ their medical care, seek it elsewhere. As liability becomes a huge factor these days, we must ask ourselves, why after a clear explanation as to this persons complaints, is this Doctor seemingly, doing nothing?! That's where Doctor / Patient privilege comes in. We know nothing as to this case, his Doctor does. Of course, clearing up the contradiction of statements can go a long way with sympathy.

Get a new doctor asap. It makes no sense to have a doctor you can't communicate with. You are paying him for a service, he isn't paying you! There are many alternatives to the patch. I'm surprised the doctor started you on those without trying other medications first. Fentanyl is the strongest opiate type drug out there (milligram for milligram).

Your symptoms definitely sound like withdrawal from the fentanyl patch.  fentanyl is a very powerful drug and can have some pretty severe side effects and sudden withdrawal from it can cause horrific symptoms.  I, myself, went through a horrible withdrawal from it when I was switching to another pain medication (it was my choice to change to another medication because of side effects, but it was my idiot doctor's choice to remove the patch all at once without weaning me down to a lower dosage and then off of it - I was on the 50mcg patch)  My withdrawal symptoms not only included the ones that you describe, but also horrible nausea and dry heaves and I ended up going into seizures (I had never before had a seizure, nor have I had one since).

If you need/want to get off the fentanyl, you definitely need to do it under a doctor's care and slowly wean off of it.

Hi:

Have you given it thought that you're experiencing with drawls? Wearing the Patch for even two weeks can produce the symptoms you're experiencing...especially the stretching of the arms and legs, can't sleep or concentrate. The Patch can give you slight blurred vision but nothing that glasses can't take care of. Get a pair of readers.

You sound rather confused and this is also a huge part of both wearing the Patch and w/d's. You should really seek out a new Doctor if the one you have now isn't listening. If your in college and want to pass your classes then this isn't the drug for you...not with your symptoms anyway.

Please take care and next time you should post your other post in the same one. Nobody gets your other post.

Hi Keep...

I too am confused by your two posts. If you are out of them than if seems your physician quit prescribing them but this post states you took it off and don't want to take it any more.

I cannot guess what may be the cause of your symptoms. I was on the fentanyl patch for almost 3 weeks and had to discontinue taking it due to an allergic reaction. I did not experience withdrawal symptoms. Obviously we are all different.

As Sandee said if your physician is not listening to your needs it is time to find another. We all have to be our own health care advocates. Be assertive and take charge of your medical care.

Best of luck to you and take care.

I am a little confused as I see in your other post that you are out of your patches and can't get a hold of your doctor.
In any case if your doctor is not listening to you then it is time to find another doctor ASAP!
There are many PM doctors and some do not listen to what their Pt's are telling them and this hinders your treatment dramatically. Ask your PCP to refer you elswhere.
What state do you live in by the way?
