Butt Pain - primarily from sitting

I have had undiagnosed pain in by butt for many years, recently solved the problem and am posting this message to help others with similar issues...hope it helps.

For the past six years, the pain in my 'butt' got worse and worse.   Essentially it would start hurting the moment I sat down and get worse and worse.  Eventually I came me to know the 'butt' as the ischial tuberosity...At first it was just annoying, but eventually it got so bad that I had to have a special memory foam pad that I carried around with me to sit on almost any chair.  Finally it got so bad that I bought a special desk that I could raise up so I could work standing up... ...no amount of exercising (or lack of exercise) would help as the act of sitting down itself seemed to be the primary problem.

For several years I was under the 'care' of two orthopedic surgeons (one for hip and one for back). They took x-rays, told me some nonsense about me having bone spurs, etc...and that there was basically nothing I could do except get cortisone shots every few months for the rest of my life (I am 38 and that didn't sound so great to me).  I finally pushed them into prescribing physical therapy for me from a great sports therapist - he thought it had to do with either tight hamstrings putting pressure on the tendon at the ischial tuberosity or perhaps bursitis or maybe some sort of nerve problem.  Unfortunately after three months of very detailed therapy, my therapist told me he didn't think it was helping and that physical therapy was unlikely to be my solution.  I agreed, as any relief that I got was less than a 5% improvement in my pain...

That was when I had the breakthrough.  I know this sounds crazy, but I went to see a chiropractor that a friend recommended (Dr. Thorne at Greenville Avenue Chiropractic in Dallas) and within 5 minutes of poking around at various pressure points he said 'I think all you need is some calcium'.  Evidently, if you are calcium deficient, the blood will drain calcium from your bones and this can interfere with the ability of tendons to properly heal in the normal course of life.  I actually felt a significant difference immediately after my first session with the chiropractor...probably a 50% improvement.

I have now been taking calcium pills (1500mg 2x per day of any brand of calcium citrate with vitamin D for absorption will do) for three weeks and had three sessions with the chiropractor.  I would say I am now 80% improved with constant improvement...if I never got any better I would be fine just three weeks ago I was worried about my future.  However, I believe that over time as the body absorbs the calcium that I am taking my pain will be gone entirely.
Literally this has been like a miracle for me.  At a minimum try the calcium and if you are so inclined, find a good chiropractor to go to as well.  I don't know if the calcium would have done the trick or not without the chiropractor, but regardless this is what happened to me.  I can tell you with confidence that the typical MD route will have nothing to offer for your pain.  Good luck.

I just recently started having pain in this area... I have had a previous back injury to L4/5 and at the time it was discovered that I also had DDD. I also have bursitis in both hips as well as my shoulders. I am not getting enough rest (busy with work and going back to school) AND I know I don't get enough calcium... also with my new job, my eating habits have changed as I do not get an actual lunch, so I am merely eating snack type foods as I do not have time to heat something up (we get 2 15 minute breaks on our 8 hour shift) I have no insurance, so going to a DR or chiropractor is not in the mix... I don't know how much longer I can make it. I am exhausted and in pain most of the time... :(

Hi dclark99,

I tried this (Calcium + Vitamin D) based on your post and it has helped me too! Thanks a lot for posting your case. Greatly appreciate this!.

I had the condition where i could not sit for more than an hour without pain. Had a hard time getting out of the car and difficulty getting up from the chair too. I had been suffering this for more than a year and a half.

I've been taking the Calcium(600mgx2) and Vit D for close to 2 weeks and the pain has been at a 2 (out of 10) for that long. I noticed improvement in the first day from an 8 and am happy it has stayed there for this long. I'm hoping like you too that it will go away in a few weeks. I'll let my Chiro know too!

Once again thank you and thanks to Dr. Thorne!

would you be able to post how the chiropractor helped in terms of manipulation? Clearly thats where the short term result has come from even if calcium helps longer term.
I have the same ischial tuberosity pain for years, nothing on MRI and physio/exercise programmes have not helped.  Am so pleased you have had  good results and, frankly, there are hundreds of posts from people who have had failed therapy so its wonderful to hear some positivity.   Hilary

if your butt pain returns after treatment, i'd look into it being a pilonidal cyst cause frankly that sounds more like what u have. good luck.

I have had sciatic pain that was so bad I spent most of the day in bed, the only thing that relieved the excruciating pain. I had two injections into the spine after 4 MRIs showed nothing abnormal  I have had 80% relief from the sciatica, but am left with buttock pain that leaves me unable to sit for more than an hour.  I feel that is painful, but nothing like the pain I had before. I am going to go back to physical therapy next week.  Is there anything I can do in the meantime to help?
