5 yr old just starting buspar

Does anyone here take buspar and even better does anyone have a 5 yr old or know someone with a 5 yr old who is taking buspar?  My grandson just started it today and of course all of us including his mom and dad are not compfortable with the whole idea. But on the other hand we hate to see him suffer in that tiny brain of his.
Most people would say he is a normal 5 yr old and he is. In some aspects he is just to the extreme. Some examples are he stopped napping at age 2and 1/2 and litterly does not stop talking or moving. He would live out doors if it was possible , he is just really over the top. Really you would have to live it to see what i am trying to say. My husband thinks we are all crazy which makes me feel very uncompfortable. My grandson was kicked out of preschool because he was too much for the two teachers to handle. He is now for the past two yrs attending a special school for children with different issues. Examples are: hyper activity, different types of behavioural issues due to envirement or simply being born with whatever mental disorder. Yes we all have our own mental disorder but if medication can help why not try it. I believe that it could save allot of heartache for the child and parent if the med works. I have seen so many children suffer and struggle because their parent were in denial.  well i would like to know more about buspar. Anyone?

the poster hasn't been here in a little while.  If you want, you can start your own thread and tell us about your situation and we will see if we can help.  Do you have a little one starting medication?

When ever i hear of a child being prescribed these drugs i suddenly become very anxious and extremely concerned for the child in question and the reason being this.  These drugs are designed to alter the chemicals within the brain, now a child's brain, esspecially one so young, is still in the early developmental stages and is forming neural pathways which will eventually make him the person that he will become when he is an adult.  Now giving these HARSH chemical altering drugs will interfer with his brain development and stop these important and life altering neural pathways from developing, so interfering with his natural course of development.  Some of these drugs turn off neural transmitters within the brain and others turn them on, so eventually when he is taken off of these drugs his brain may have vast trouble with adapting to the new alteration which can cause a whole host of problems within itself.  New mental condtions such as panic disorders, depressions, etc....

Personally i feel your husband is correct in saying that you are all crazy cause by allowing the doctor to give your grandson these drugs you are opening up a whole can of worms that may spill out and cause a great big mess for him in his future.  I really think it is not worth it at all.  Also just to add these drugs are famous, in children and teenagers, for worsing symptoms such as mania and can cause self-harm and sucide attempts and a decline in school and general performance due to being so 'zoned' out all the time.  Busper also has a very high risk for causing seizures in users due to over stimulating the nervous system.

Please re-think the decision to give ur grandson this drug or any other that involves altering the mind.  I personally would look to a more natural source like homopathy or some type of massge to help relax him, i can't remember the name right at the mo but foot massage is extremely good for reaching the pressure points n calming the nervous system.  Good-luck and let us knw what u all decide.

hi jim, i was wondering, how you were as a child? i know myself i was a depressed child or mybe just add or maybe just anxiety. all i know is i deff had issues. mostly what sticks out in my mind is i always felt sad and scared. i was also extremely sensitive. i would cry at the drop of a hat if my feelings were hurt. so what im gettting at is, if back then if they knew or should i say also if i knew what they know now about mental disorders, i would have appreciated if my parents would have helped me in some way (maybe medication if needed). if i was diabetic they would have helped me. the prb with mental ilness is there is no test. i dont know , it just makes me really sad. i am now your exact age and if been on effexor and adderall and it changed my life. i have been on meds since my late 20's.

Hi, I know this is an old post but I'm wondering how things turned out with your grandson. My wife and I are currently facing the same decision for our 6 year old son.
You might want to make a new post -- this one is 8 years old.  Some of us will notice, but most won't.  That being said, why on Earth would a 6 year old be considered for a drug that affects the brain?  It won't be fully developed until college age, so again, this is pretty young, why?  And why this drug, which doesn't particularly work for anyone?  You don't say what the situation is that is leading your docs to recommend brain affecting drugs to someone that young, so nobody can really comment, and I don't know if anyone who posted on this back in 2010 is still around -- I guess we'll find out.

if it were my child, and it isn't, I'd go see a holistic nutritionist and see if there's a food sensitivity lurking there.  You can try on your own to just remove wheat and dairy from the diet and see if it helps -- it does more often than most people know.  You can also look into homeopathy, which doesn't use any active ingredients so the worst that can happen is it doesn't work.  Good luck.

I agree he is much too young. That is what makes it so hard for us. Believe me this is not easy and we are so undecided on weather we are doing the right thing or not. And yes we did have him to a child psychiatrist and a child therapist. Honestly i dont think anyone has the right answer. And i have had doctors tell me that themselves in the past and the present. The special school that he attends that strictly deals with behavioral issues told us that also. They said "if we had the answers we would be out of a job, noone has the answers. Thats part of the problem." When ya think about it , it makes allot of sence. It's very depressing to  watch your baby go through this. If you observe and live with him you can clearly see that he is so anxious.  We have been working with him for two years and he clearly has a high level of anxiety. I really wish there was a brain scan that could tell you exactly what how and why your brain responds the way it does and then how to fix it.  weather its just behavioural therapy or the right medication. Thanks for your comments and please feel free to keep responding. we need all the help and advice there  is out there.

Children that young shoudl RARELY EVER be prescribed a med like this....even for extreme circumstances.  A child that young is constantly gorwing and developing.

If I were you, I would seek out a second opinion from a CHILD psychiatrist, BEFORE he starts any medication.

There are many many many other options that could be put in place to address his behavioral issues.  Meds are just never a good idea in a child that young.  If it were MY child, I would never ever consider it.

My small knowledge of buspar is it hasn't proved to do much in studies.  I'd also be very careful with someone that young.  I also know buspar as originally being for anxiety but it didn't work very well -- it's main current use is as an adjunct to supercharge ssris.  Are you seeing a specialist in pediatric psychiatry, or an internist?  And you might try directing this question to Dr. Gould on the mental health forum, though he isn't a pediatric specialist and so may pass on the question.
