Acid reflux - severe belching ?? Please help :-(

Somebody please help me, I am becoming more and more miserable by the day!!
Two and a half weeks ago I started feeling really gassy in my chest and felt like I had a huge bubble of air under my rib cage/my tummy and kept burping but not normal burps, it felt like trapped wind stuck in my oesophagus and they are constant.  And kept getting an acidic taste in my mouth.  Also my upper tummy was/has been making the most awful noises, it sounds like I have gallons and gallons of water in my stomach when I don't after I eat or drink something! So a few days later I went to A&E about it (couldn't get a GP appt as I was working night shifts at the time), and she did blood tests for my gall bladder and a rectal examination which all came back normal, so the doctor put it down to an acid reflux (I am 22 years old by the way).  Prescribed me lanoprazole and said to keep an eye on it.  Took them for a few days, helped the symptoms for a few hours but kept happening so went back to A&E, saw an absolutely useless doctor who couldn't wait to get rid of me who also said acid reflux and said the lanoprazole will take weeks to kick in.  Anyway symptoms persisted over days, I tried everything - assilone, peptac, drinking water/milk, which helped for a short time but not long enough! So went to my GP and he thinks it's my gall bladder and has referred me to have an ultrasound of my upper abdo this week (it's on Wednesday 28th April).  Anyway a couple more days passed and I kept having the constant belching, all the time, and like I say they are like trapped wind burps, constant!! Driving me insane and my tummy keeps making the wishy-washy noise so I went BACK to my GP and saw a different doctor, who thinks it's IBS (irritable bowel syndrome - been told I have that before), as when she examined my tummy it hurt in certain places that she pressed, and I have been opening my bowels more than normal - no diahorea at all, just soft stool - normal colour also.  So she said my bowels are inflamed.  I requested to have a gastroscopy so she has sent off for me to have one done.  I also told her that where I am constantly burping all of the time, it has made it feel like I have a lump in the back of my throat, she said that is caused by stress (I have been stressing over it BIGTIME and been crying almost every day cos it's so so uncomfortable and ruining my lifestyle), and she said the acid also causes it as it aggrevates my throat.

Please can someone who has these symptoms talk to me! And tell me if all this constant belching is normal.  I am going for a blood test tomorrow morning to check my pancreas is all okay and that will rule out any problems.

Please help I just find myself crying all the time cos I dunno how to control it :-( and I am such a paranoid person I keep thinking worst case scenario which obviously isn't helping as stress makes it worse... but I can't help it :-(

I was just doing online research when I stumbled on your question. I am experiencing the exact same thing as you. It makes me feel better knowing that others are going through the same thing but it concerns me that no doctors know what the cause is or how to fix it. If you've had any luck in your journey, please please please let me know, this feeling is torture.

I don't know if you found an answer already but I am posting my experience to help out any other person. I had the same problem, burped 100 times a day, long dragging burps. Doctors did every test in the world on me, was taking anti acids, they went into my stomach to see If there was something causing my burping. They told me to stop eating pepper and tomatoes completely. One day I woke up and the burping ceased. After 8 months of everything and nothing worked, It suddenly just stopped. Ask me how, for three days, I traveled to a different state, and they delivered breakfast. I ate a heavy breakfast and the burping seized completely. I was shocked. I had always skipped breakfast now I know it truly is the most important meal of the day. I just couldn't believe something so simple as a heavy breakfast could solve my problem. Please if you are going through excessive burping and the doctors can't point to a specific thing causing it, try eating a heavy breakfast, it solved mine completely.

There are a ton of responses here with all sorts of ideas. If you read one that says "This IS the cause. Do THIS," ignore it. A lot of it is based on personal theories, none of which are proven by the scientific method. Also, no one treatment works for everyone. So when someone is insistent, give pause. Do what works for you. Watch your diet for sure, but be wary of advice that goes in the face of medical advice, unless it IS under the supervision of a GI doc; preferably a GERD specialist.

Most of us need to watch acid in the diet. So if someone says "This IS caused by low acid production" as if we are all in the same boat, and then insists on drinking vinegar or other acidic items, BEWARE!

Also beware of easy cure-alls. Something that promises that all your problems will be solved in days, are something to be wary of. Quick fixes and hidden solutions appeal to us because we have problems that we oh so WISH could just be gone, and we could be "normal" again. When you want a cure, you become vulnerable to suggestion.

I  suffered from acid reflux for years until I learned about apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar cured my acid reflux.
Try this.
Buy Unpasteurized Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with mother.
After every meal take 2 or 3 teaspoon of apple cider in a glass of water . Make sure you shake the bottle before you pour the apple cider because the residue(Mother) is important part of the cure . After a day or two your acid reflux will be history.

I have burping problem for the past 3 months, I had heart burn issues for few months (before 4 years) but I became alright after cutting down coffee and tea. I recently started drinking tea - one cup every day - and am now affected by belching (20-30 times a day) issue, empty stomach gives me frequent trouble.

I am going to (a) start cutting down  sugar, gluten products, carbs (b) increase physical activity (c) increase protein.

Hopefully it works and addresses the problem.

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

The poster you are commenting to, may no longer be an active member (see the date) so you may want to create a new thread or post to one with a current date.

Reflux does not always come with heartburn....so with out it it is still possible to have reflux. One is known as Silent reflux since there is no heart burn most of the time.

Soda regardless it helps you get the pressure out by burping is not good for you....we are told to avoid carbonated bevs as well as caffeine...and certain foods...spicy,acidic, greasy.....

Stress and anxiety will add to your symptoms so do try to relax while you try to work thru this......xtra weight gains and even weight loss can cause reflux symptoms to flare.

Since you are on a med, can I assume you are under a Drs care?

Any luck?  See my post under piggy14.  Trying to figure this out.  I think I have low stomach acid but not sure.  I still think it could be a hernia.  Let me know and keep in touch!

I came across your post and wanted to see how you were doing.  I found many things you wrote and responded to very interesting.  I have an issue that is so messed up, I don't know what to do.  I think it is similar to some of the symptoms written about.  Since the end of November, I have had a tightness in my throat, that I get off and on throughout the day, sometimes right after I eat and sometimes I get it when I'm very hungry.  What's interesting is the only thing that makes it go away temporarily is eating and drinking, or laying completely flat or on my side.  My anxiety medication helps as well.  Diet dew soda helps me burp, relieving some pressure, or eating causes pressure leading to burping.  If I'm not careful though and eat or drink too much, I have pushed out a burp with some stomach contents as well.  What is crazy is I don't believe this is reflux.  Antacids are not helping and I feel they may make it worse.  Do I need more enzymes or acid?  I do believe something is wrong though and that gas is getting trapped.  I have only regurgitated maybe 5 times in the last month and usually after a big meal.  It's not always acidic either.  I can often push out burps by forcing out my chest or doing the throat or attempt of a burp - that thing young kids love to do.  I have no pain, no problems with bowel movements, no bleeding, no heartburn except once in the last two months. Some info about me.....I take zanex twice a day but have been for 2.5 years and that has not caused anything weird except maybe some dry mouth.  I have some severe allergies to outside pollens at times and cats.  I used to hack up tons of white phlegm at night, to the point where it grossed me out.  I still do at night and in the morning, but it's not as bad.  I have been a chronic cheese eater my whole life, but pretty sure this is not a lactose problem, but could it be contributing to it?  I am about 20 pounds over weight but have been hitting gym hard for 2 months now.  That has maybe helped some but symptoms persist.  And lastly, I had a bad bowel movement at the end of November that I seriously strained so hard to work through it, that I'm worried I might have injured myself or caused a hiatal hernia....is that possible?  I haven't had a bad bowel movement since and no diarrhea at all, but I know this started after that.  I also sit for around 8 hours a day.  Is that causing it?  Is my body curved now or something off from slouching. anyone have feedback or help?  I'm looking at 3000 dollars for an endoscopy.  Should I be worried.  These symptoms for me, started at the end of November, but I do recall once in a while having the tightness in my throat late in the day at work when being dry, dehydrated , and hungry.  if you or anyone can help, please contact me.  It's affecting my mood and my work.  I'm getting anxiety about it.

Hi,
I am also facing this problem since 5 weeks. went to gastro dr and he prescribed one tablet for acid reflex and told me that the tablet will reduce the acid production. From the next day I started to belch. btw I took tests like abdominal scan, liver function test and CBC. now dr asked me to go for a  endoscopy. I belch averagely 5 to 6 times / hour. while I am on bed its not belching but once got up it starts.
Anyone help me out here?

Hi SelmaS
I'm pretty sure it's something to do with your balance of neurotransmitters and this can create an imbalance of gut flora. try taking probiotics. there are lots on the market. make sure you get a reputable brand. many yoghurts have Lactobacillus acidophilus but i'd go the capsules. more concentrated.
I've found a number of antidepressants can cause burping because they change your neurotransmitters.
It drives you nuts and doctors don't seem to know about it. I worked this out myself.
it's also natural!
diet may then make more of a difference
also try exercising to increase your dopamine
I'd love to hear if this has any effect for you
good luck

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

Stress can be a big contributor to reflux....so you will need to try and relax and it can take time b4 you begin to see the benefits of the meds and altered diet....you should also modify your lifestyle as well.

The med you are on is a proton pump inhibitor....if in another 30 days you still feel this way, talk to your Dr about trying a H2b which is a histamine blocker....it seems many of us with LPR or silent reflux also have post nasal drip....and  an over production of histamines....so it may be beneficial  to block those instead of the acids in your stomach...

All you can do is try different things....keep a journal to find your food triggers...and keep track of your moods as well...

Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi, had all the problems with trapped gas and belching. Try a good quality digestive enzymes with betaine hcl. Works like magic. Problem is caused by low stomach acid. You can test yourself using the bicarbonate of soda test. Google it. Low stomach acid causes poor digestion. You need stomach acid to trigger the release of digestive enzymes and correct function of stomach valves. Undigested food gasses off in small bowel causing bloating. This gas and bile mix is forced back into the stomach where the presence of some acid reacts to form even more volatile gas hence violent belching. Remedy. Take digestive enzymes that have betaine hcl with each meal. Eat more protein and less carbs.

Hi there,

Do you want to try a few natural things and see if it works:  swap your normal coffee with decaffeinated. If you have a lazy or hypotensive LES then this would definitely help.  And no chocolates!  You'll feel the difference in about a week's time.

You can opt to see a Dietitian or ask for a referral to see a Gastro Ent and get some tests done.

Please let me know how you are going.

Frankly even decaff coffee gives me a worse reacation than small quantities of chocolate. We are all different. Everything suggested is worth trying, but let's not forget it's trial and error for everyone here.

Hi there. thanks for the reply smiley. , may be i guess so but I'm not quite sure about it as the food or any liquid i have gets stuck in my upper stomach and then i have to swirl around to burp it out , and the painful part is that i want to burp but they do not come immediately and when they do they come in really small amounts. I was facing the similar problem few months back but it wore off within two weeks , but this time it just feels like its never gonna go.
No i never had an Endoscopy before , i went to the doctor and he said it might be dyspepsia but he wasn't quite sure himself , he prescribed me pantoprazole and gaviscon  other than that i am also having garlic with boiling water , i don't know what to do i just keep thinking of it and it keeps on making me depress , its been 4 weeks now and every thing i tried seems to ineffective. please i need help this is the worst kind of illness i have ever witnessed .

Hi there,

From my experience, you have acid reflux and that is why you burp all the time and feel as if food gets stuck in your chest.

Have you had an Endoscopy before? any Doctor told you that you have acid reflux?

I had the same symptoms for many years, pain, discomfort and embarrassment.  Diagnosed with reflux, IBS, Gerd, constipation. Nothing worked, no medicine worked, no antacids, no fiber product such as miralax or Metamucil.

Belching/pain finally ended using 1) 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar in water and 2) following a high protein, very low carb (strictly low starch vegetables), no sugar, no dairy (no Fodmaps diet) basically a combination of Paleo/Atkins.  It amazed me how quickly all the symptoms went away.
