nissen wrap to tight

I had a laprascopic nissen fundoplication about 3 and a half months ago, I have had no heartburn back, but the problem now is I get terrible wind and I cant burp to save my life, and it is made 10x worse when I try and have a pint of alcohol, the pain is so severe it lasts about  2 to 3days and then slowly starts to die off, I rang the hospital and they think that the wrap might be to tight, and that I might need a second op to slacken the wrap! Iam totaly gutted to say the least! has this happened to anyone and is this a big operation? can it be done by key whole agian? or will this eventually calm down on its own? thanks ben.

In 2008, I had a nissan fundolplcation after medication did not stop the progressive acid reflux.  The relief was immediate...with no problems for over 10 years.

In 2018 had a second Nissan fundoplication done with mesh. Problems have continued for over 6 months....extreme pain, inability to burp or vomit, severe nausea. Diagnosis is the wrap is too tight. Seeking help at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN (considered Number One gastroenterology clinic in USA).

DO NOT HAVE THE NISSEN. I hope you are able to read this in time, but the Nissen is by far the worst option any doctor can offer for relief from heartburn, or any problem. Your life will be totally changed and permanently. I am 37 and had the surgery done at 36 because my stomach moved inside of my esophagus and caused severe acid burn. My surgeon pressed me to go ahead with the wrap and told me I was a good candidate for it. I did not think about it until too late that maybe the acid was there because my stomach moved and if it was put back into place maybe I would not need the wrap. Well, I have had problems ever since the surgery. My stomach is huge and tight, I choke on food and drink (no alcohol) and now have shortness of breath to the point of choking. I have some secretions that keep rising up in my chest and throat and more. I was told today in the ER that my wrap is more than likely too tight and the secretions are there because of the acid that is moving back and forth, but cannot get up into my esophagus, so it leaves secretions. But, since the wrap is so tight I am choking on the secretions and feel like there is food stuck in my chest. I cannot throw up, belch, and have terrible bowel movements all due to the Nissen procedure. Please do not let any doctors tell you this is an isolated incident because that is an outright lie! There are so many people that complain about this surgery, but doctors are out for the money and will do them even though patients complain and need them undone or redone. But, guess what, the doctors make the money to redo or undo the surgery.

Hi Reavis

I had the fundoplication done 7 years ago and it most certainly cured my reflux. After a year I had a problem with other symptoms and had it undone.12 months on after having it undone, I had very severe reflux which has caused  a lot of damage to my gullet, but also have motility problems and now have a sliding and rolling hiatus hernia.  Consequently my only option is to have a fundoplication again. The operation does improve reflux in most people but I would say be absolutely sure you want it done and weigh up the benefits against what you are suffering with now. If you are controlled with PPIs and no damage is being caused by the acid - think very carefully, as it is a major operation albeit keyhole surgery.  Good luck.

I am thinking of having the fundoplicationn surgery to cure acid reflux but am a little concerned if I should have it done. I worry that it may be worse after. I am 72 and wonder if I should just keep on going as is. Does anyone have any suggestions or stories of thrie experiences? Would appreciate any help you can give to me. Thanks   Pat K

Hi...sorry u r having this issue.....I have heard complaints about the nissen  and reflux/gerd will react with  alcohol....I would avoid it as well as spicy foods until ur wrap loosens up or u have it surgically loosened.

Good luck I wish I had more info for u
