get mirena out? or leave it in?

should i have my mirena taken out? it was placed at the end of 2003. i havent had a period since then. now (friday the 23rd) i found out that i have a cyst on my left ovary. i was curious as to wether or not i should have it removed. from my research, it seems you get a cyst from not ovulating and not having a full monthly cycle. has anyone else had this issue? do you have any suggestions? i dont think i want any more kids but not 100% sure and i always had trouble taking pills. please help!!

i have no idea if it is complex. its been nice to not have a period, but it seems to be so un natural. i talked to a nutritionist and im going to start on some herbal supplements. she said they will help decrease the size and i have to go back for an ultrasound in 6 weeks. so basically im going to try that, getting the mirena out and do a lot of praying and hoping that it helps.

Hi, I have this issue currently and would like to know whether this was resolved for you. My cyst is painful, although on ultrasound it's not massive, about 3cm. I've had it for 8 months. Keep wondering whether having the Mirena out would help, but all of the medical profession tell me no, leave it in. They are fixated on Mirena being a miracle product and seem to push it at every opportunity! Would be good to hear an unbiased view regarding my particular situation. Thanks!
Hi Janeyrop.  So sorry you had to deeltwith this.  I find now myself in the same painful boat, but only 5 days after Mirena placement.  Ultrasound tech found cyst and I'll be talking with my doctor today, but wondering what you ended up doing, and if you heard from others in your travels on this.
Many thanks in advance!

I am 45 years old and I have had a Mirena coil for 9 years (5 years then replacement for 4 years) and had no periods for all of those 9 years!

I had surgery 1 week ago to have my 5cm cyst, ovary & tube removed.  My gynecologist removed my Mirena for the surgery and replaced it with a new one which will be good for another 5 years.
I did discuss being sterilised during my surgery instead of a new Mirena but didn't fancy the idea of my periods returning.  I had NO pain or symptoms from my cyst, in fact it was only found as a result of a routine eye appointment, so the discomfort of this past week was well worth it to be period-free for all this time!

On the leaflet Ovarian Cysts are listed as a side effect but as with everything, it won't happen to everyone.  If I stay healthy now until my menopause it will have been worth it (although I'm not sure how I'll know when my menopause will start!)

Do you know if your cyst is complex?  At 5cm, it is of a size that usually warrants surgical removal if it is not resolving on its own.  I can see how that would give you symptoms.  Honestly, with the extra information you just provided, I think you may want to consider getting a second opinion if your doctor doesn't plan to do anything about the cyst.   It may be a good idea to not use Mirena if that is a side effect.  Even benign cysts can rupturea and cause infection.  As a cyst increases in size, it is more likely to rupture.  Good luck to you!

the doc never seems concerned about my period. she always says its ok that its because the iud. the cyst is 5 cm. the doc said its medium size but that there isnt anything to make the cyst go away, i just have to deal with it. it is causing symptoms and driving me nuts. at the moment im sooo bloated that i look like im 6 months pregnant, im nauseaus all the time and its painful. the pain is always there but the severity of it changes. i did decide to get the iud out and start on bc pills, hoping that my period will regulate. i just hope there isnt any damage from not having it that wont correct itself.

This is definitely an issue you need to address with your doctor.  Cysts commonly come and go even without taking medications.  It is hard (if not impossible)  to determine what caused your cyst.  Is yours large or causing symptoms?

I do not have personal experience with Mirena and don't have a personal story to share.  But, it does seem like you have been without a period for a long time.  Maybe you can find an alternative bc solution for awhile to see if it helps your cyst.  Your doctor will know if this is a common occurrence with Mirena.  Good luck to you!
