back of neck burning heat

My 81 yr old mom has had a burning sensation at the back of her neck for months now, it is accompanied by headaches and sometimes stomach acid.  It is so uncomfortable that it is difficult to sleep.  It is mildly alleviated by cold packs.  She has had a brain MRI, her thyroid has been check, her colon and stomach, and her hormone levels. She also has high blood pressure that sky-rockets during these episodes.  This heat has bothered her on and off for several years, usually it goes away after a month or two, but this time it hasn't.  The doctors have suggested that it might be her anxiety and have given her Xanax, but I don't think that's working at all.  I also think there's something else besides anxiety, although I do believe it may be a secondary factor.  Any other suggestions as to where we could go with this?  She has seen her General, a neurologist, had an endoscopy, and a colonoscopy.  She's generally in good health, doesn't smoke or drink, takes good care of herself, gets exercise 4-5 times weekly (walking).

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Apart from anxiety, the heat can be due to hyperthyroidism, hormonal imbalance of menopause or a pinched cervical spinal nerve. Since your mother has high BP, it can also be due to deep vein thrombosis in the neck region. MRI of cervical spine, dopplar studies, FSH, LH, estrogen & progesterone assessment and thyroid function would need to be done.
I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Take care!

And to all who took the time to respond.  THANK YOU.  I appreciate your helpful thoughts.

As for the heat on the back of her neck.  No there is no hives, no change of medication or even situation.  These episodes seem to come on her without rhyme of reason, they are accompanied by stomach acid and headaches, no hives or rashes.  Hormones have been checked, thyroid has been checked as well as several blood tests looking for occult cancer, and MRI on brain.  I'm now think that a more direct examination on the neck would be the next step.  She needs an MRI on her neck.  We are seeing her doctor on Monday and we will discuss the possibility of the deep vein thrombosis or any other direct causes.  Thank you again for your consideration.

Have you tried a chiropractor? A logans chiropractor has low force manipulation techniques. Or an accupressurists...?
