papilloma

I have nipple discharge of the left breast for over 20 years,(sometimes sticky and yellow in color, sometimes looks a little bloody)  I had a mammography and was diagnosed with a papilloma. The doctor said a biopsey must be done and then the papilloma must be surgically removed in the left breast.  The right breast they saw what they believe is a papilloma however they want another mammography done in 6 months.(They just want to monitor this one).  Is surgery necessary.I should also mention that the left breast for a few months now has been hurting me a bit (not extreme just a bit) whereas this was never painful before

The biopsy should certainly indicate malignant or benign but surgical removal is still recommended. As far as waiting; that would be something decided between you and your Dr.s ... I don't believe they would go ahead with surgery until it was completely safe considering your weakend condition due to your other issues.    Regards ...

from a needle biopsey is it possible to tell if it is cancerous or benign? If so and if it shows as benign can we do without the surgery?  If surgery is necessary can we wait a bit before having it as I just got over a serious bout of pneumonia and a very large mass on the lung which had to be dealt with and I am still terribly weak.

Absolutely, this is the standard treatment for Papilloma; please follow the recommendations made by your treating Physicians. Papillomas can be cancerous as well as benign and it is wise to take no chances with these issues.  Regards ....
