pilates and spinal fusion

I had a spinal fusion in L/5  S/1 a couple of years ago.  I also have a severe arthritic facet in the level above the fusion and degenerative disk disease.

Would pilates be helpful as long as I am working with a PT who is trained in pilates?  I had tried pilates with a regular instructor and I think she caused me more pain.

I don't want to do anything to cause another surgery.

Thank you

I would first consult your treating physician.  If the physician approves Pilates he/ she should give your physical therapist guidelines to protect your spine.  The physical therapist should do a full evaluation and provide you with rational of implementing palates instead of other core stabilizing activities in a neutral spine.  Best in health, JAG

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.  My PT is of the opinion that using Pilates taught by a PT would be the way for me to learn how to stabilize my back and quit firing my back muscles at the wrong time.  I will still be using some of the basic exercises as well.

Unfortunately, my surgeon seems to not wish to deal with anything unless another surgery is needed.

I was looking for confirmation that I was on the right track and just wanted to make sure I was not making a mistake.

I can see, after starting classes with the new instructor, that she will be able to help me.  She does work closely with my regular PT.  I appreciate you taking the time to write back to me.  It is such a maze trying to figure out the correct path.

Thank you
