finger foods

Well Ezra will be 8 months old on wednesday and i am just wondering what kind of finger foods everyone else is giving their baby.... I am terrified of him choking... I have been giving him those gerber puff things but i brake them into pieces.... i will sometimes give him what i am eating depending on what it is but i break it into a little spec cause i dont want him to choke.... so what is a safe size for them? i am a third time mom and i dont remember any of this...

I'm back!!!! It's been forever! LoL
This is such a great question, I'm a paranoid freak when it comes to feeding my lil Penelope finger food. I wish I wasn't!!! :(

hmmmm I am so so!!!!  Ella had her first biscuit yesterday and she munched it!!!  I think she was like hmmmm I don't get this much!!!!
I do give Ella some I don't know what you call them but they are like round things with holes in the middle and they are all different colours.  Like loopy fruities I think.  They are blimmin expensive because they are health food ones with no additives etc.  I don't think she really likes them lol.

My kiddies only drinks are water and milk.  We don't have juice or soda in the house.  I REFUSE to give Ella any juice what so ever.  She had her first bit of icecream and threw it up so no more icecream and yes she did throw up the chocolate bickie I gave her yesterday so its back to only fruits and vegetables now.

My other kids are not allowed packaged food of any sort.  I do buy the odd muesli bar but I only buy the ones with natural ingredients and no additives.  They are expensive but well worth it.  My kids are allowed a fizz if we are naughty enough to have mc donalds when we are too lazyt o cook.  Ella does not have any!!!

I believe you need to watch what your kids eat but you also need to allow your children to have them as treats.  My kids know that all that stuff are treats and only treats.  They do not ask for them in the shopping and if they do it is a big NO!!!!

My kids sometimes get a chocolate bar when we go food shopping if they are good.  The chocolate bars are also blimmin expensive because I get the ones with no added sugar etc from the health food section.

Haha that's so true I remember only milk or water too and my special treat was coffee (mostly milk) with grandparents. And we too didn't do much snacking but fruits as a snack good old ants on a log (celery sticks w peanut butter and raisins). I'm totally good crazy I think. I don't go as far as organic but I won't even feed gerber snacks to Ellie because 1 serving contains HALF the FDA allowance of sodium for children under the age of 5. These are the gerber meals like chicken noodles and peas!  Which you would think are healthy. My husbands mom and dad wanted to give Ellie Oreo cookies and I told them no same with Jello then they asked if we put her to sleep on her tummy and if we should put whiskey on her gums, I thought I was going to have a stroke :P

Sun, Your baby hasn't lived until they got nilla wafers everywhere!!!!(j/k) Lol I give them to Lauren as a treat a couple of times a week meaning 4 cookies a week.  Its so funny I remember as a kid drinking coffee(mostly milk and sugar) with my grandpa and it didn't kill me.  And now I am like no coffee soda juices to all my kids.. ...lol im such a mean mommy they get water or milk and as a treat I let them get a drink of their choice when we go out to eat twice a month. I think back in the day when I was a kid anyway cookies chips soda juice were all treats at my house not something we got everyday.  We ate meals with good healthy hearty foods and didn't do all the "snacking" like lots of people do now but we weren't exactly rich either! Weird how things change...makes me feel old!

Brandi you gave them cookies?  My husbands parents tried to give Ellie cookies the other day and I told them no way no how. They also tried to give her a sip of coffee and I was not happy about that. I'm not all crazy food wise but no coffee, soda or tea, no cookies, no junk foods. I also don't give her juice she can have a sip of my juice but that's it

The twins love to eat finger foods. They like any of the gerber puffs, cheetos, or cookies. They've also tried a good variety of food that my hubby & I eat. They do the whole "begging" thing too whenever we go to a restaurant. They sit there & stare at us like poor little babies! Last night I gave Carly a little bit of mashed potatoes & once she tasted it, she got this "what is this?" look on her face, but she wanted more.

We separated our yard so the poop is away from the play area :). Tell your husband dogs are like vacuums but they do a better job because they sweep, vacuum and mop all at once ;)

No dogs here lol.  We decided to have another child rather than an animal :)  I would love to get a dog but hubby is adamant he doesn't  want one :(  I think we need to separate the yard so if we did get one it would have somewhere to play so it doesn't poo where the kids play

It is so cute, but like I said it is super messy. They get the cheese all over their face, arms, body and even hair. I only give them a few pieces as I know it's not the healthiest treat but they sure do have fun with it. I love watching them self feed. It amazes me how smart children are and I know that it just gets better from here!

Our girls eat most of the same foods that we do. They seem to be more interested in solid foods now more than their baby food and formula. When we ate they used to "beg" and give us the "can i try that?" look so we started and havent turned back. The only junk food that we give the girls is Cheetos puffs. Although messy, the girls LOVE them! If it's something that they could easily choke on then I will cut it into small pieces, otherwise I will give it to them whole.

Baby food works for me but im lazy!! Lol Lauren has very few baby foods that she will eat anymore because she would rather eat what I eat.  We are working on getting rid of them but that means I will actually have to cook during the day....sigh! Lol

I think wholesomebabyfood website that I sent you a link to in this thread also has recipes for baby foods based on age so if you don't do baby led weaning you could instead make foods for a 8 month old baby :)

I was very nervous at first because every parent has a fear their child will choke (or at least every parent I have met) but at 8 months they are capable of moving from the front of their mouth to the side or back on their own so they won't choke. Ellie spits out anything that is too big or does not taste good to her. My mom the other day was like OMG she has a huge chunk of watermelon in her mouth and I replied I know if it's too big she will spit it out. And sure enough out pops a large chunk of watermellon.

If you are nervous read up on it see how it sounds after you read and then do as you please, give it a go or dont. There is nothing wrong with baby food.  Parenting is all about learning/educating yourself on everything possible, keeping what works for you and discarding the rest. Baby led weaning works for our family and we have never given Ellie baby food but my family isn't your family, maybe baby food works for your family and that's ok!
