labour and childbirth in america

Hi all

Just curious once again!!!!

I watch a lot of shows like teen mom and born every minute abour labour and child birth.  I was dumb founded at how many women/young teens get given epidural, c sections and most importantly go to hospital and are able to stay in hospital when they are only 1cm dilated.  I can never understand why all of them lie down and push!!!  I guess it is all personal preference????

The reason I say this is because with my labours and with others I know in australia and New Zealand  if you are less than 3cms dilated you are sent straight home!!!!!  I never got sent home because I was 8 with my first 9 with my second and 6 with my 3rd.  With my 3rd I was soooo guttered but I had her within the hour.

I am so confused by the whole thing.  With my first I had a waterbirth and I loved it.  I had no drugs, gas etc with all 3 births.  I was mobile through the whole thing and waited until I couldn't even sit in the car on the way to the hospital because it was soo painful - I had to lie in the back seat.  With my second I probably could of had her on the way to the hospital because I had to stop myself from pushing and with my third  I was still mobile and could sit but had her pretty quick anyways.

Do women find it uncomfortable lying down with legs in stirrups (I just couldn't imagine doing that!!!!!)  and why do they admit you so early!!!!!

I don't mean to sound rude I just find it weird how women go to the hospital sooooo fast!!!!  What are your thoughts!!!

Yeah I only ever listened to my body and my midwives said nothing while I was pushing and when to start pushing.  With my son I had a little tear because he was op so as my midwife described made labour a bit more difficult.  With my other two I just had grazes but nothing serious.  I refused to lie down with my labours.  I was on my knees for all of them.

Our birth experiences were very similar. :) Water birth, fully dilated and FULL TERM (first was 2 wks "late", Second was 1 week "late") 9.1 lbs (first), 7.9 lbs (second)

On land laying on my back (first) = 4th degree tearing
Squatting in water (second) = No tearing

With my first I begged to move around. I wish I wouldn't have listened to the nurses telling me "lay back" counting to 10 and telling me when and when not to push. I wish I would have just did what my body told me to do when my body told me to do it.

With my second I did. I did unassisted water birth w/ only family and friends there. (w/ Dr. on standby incase of emergency on baby's behalf) I pushed spontaneously and had no tearing.

I know it was bloody crazy.  But I guess in those countries they don't have a choice.  She did end up getting a ride on a motorbike the short distance she hadn't walked.  I am surprised the baby didn't fall out with all that walking!!!!!!

I agree.  I have a friend who had an epidural and she could still talk through her contractions.  I told her its way too early u can do it etc.  She got it anyway and had a c-section.

Well I should rephrase with multiple births and breach they highly recommend c sections but if you wanted to deliver naturally you could.  I know if your baby is breach they would prefer it if you had a c section.  My mother delivered my sister and I naturally so it definately is possible but then we didn't come with any complications.

I guess it is all each to their own.  I just think labour should be as natural as possible!!!!  I understand women can have several complications but epidural isn't something they should give out just because a women can't handle the pain.  Sorry to be a downer to everyone but this is just my personal opinion.  I know everyone must have their horror stories about labour but if society just simplified it women would be surprised at how much pain they can handle!!!

I can honestly admit if it wasn't for my first midwife that made me stay home just by listening to me talk and listening to each contraction I definately would have begged for pain relief.  The fact that she made me stay home and made me come into hospital about 3 hours before Austin was born made me realise that I could do it without pain relief because I had to!!!!!  and the fact the gas wasn't hooked up meant I didn't have that option either!!!!!

Sorry to offend anyone but PERSONAL OPINION :)

In America you don't have to have a c section for multiples or for breach baby but many women will. My OB does not do csection for twin births he allows labor to happen and if needed they can do a csection. My cousin sees my OB and delivered twins naturally :)

I had an epidural with my first and they gave it to me way early but to make a long story short the nurse gave me the maximum dose of pitocin right off the bat! The contractions were continuous for several hours with no breaks in between contractions so after my doctor finished screaming at the nurse in the hallway he basically gave me no choice and said ur getting the epidural!  Lol at that time they could have beat me with a stick and i would have said ok if it would have made the pain stop!  Later on when it was time to push they shut it off and I pushed for 3 hrs with nothing. Rccresswell u watch too much tv!!!(j/k lmbo) between judge judy and teen mom....lol I loved to watch teen mom but only reruns come on now so I don't watch it anymore and I watch judge judy almost everyday!

It definately is crazy how other countries do things.  Over here several women elect to have a c section, why I do not know.  I do know when women have multiple births or the baby is breach they HAVE to have a c section.  I have a friend that begged for a c section because her son was 10 pound.  She had only been in labour about 10 hours when they actually listened to her because with her other 3 pregnancies the baby just fell out but her last boy was just too big to come out.

When my sister was in labour she was 15 and the hospital kept sending her home.  She was in labour for almost 2 days before she had him sucked out.  They were rushing her to have a c section but decided to give it one last go and finally got him out.  She had a horrible labour because the doctors wouldn't do anything and with her not dilating they waited and waited for her to dilate which took a long time.  Her son was 9 pound 11 ounces so you can imagine why she couldn't get him out.

Over here women have to ask for an epidural and even then the doctors try and talk you out of it. Doctors and midwives are very reluctant to give you an epidural and I am pretty sure they won't even consider it until you are about 4cms dilated. In the shows its kind of like ""ök we can give you the epidural now" I just thought that was crazy!!!!!

Most hospitals won't admit you unless you are several cm dilated unless you have a history of fast labor or you are considered high risk (like teenagers are). Most hospitals you are encouraged to "room in" with baby so family is all staying together.

The rate of c section I'll tell you right now is for 2 reasons 1. Lazy and controlling mothers and 2. The rate of obesity. Obesity is a HUGE factor in it. Fat out of shape moms have trouble with labor. I know a lot of women also say scheduling a csection was easier and more convenient so women do it. My dr would never ever ever do a c section unless the mother or baby's life was in jeopardy and my OB also will let women go past 40 weeks because the length of gestation in a first pregnancy is more like 41 weeks. The risks to both mother and baby are not worth taking unless you have a reason that out weighs those risks according to my OB.

My dr induced me because I was leaking amniotic fluid and it took them 3.5 days to confirm at which point both baby and I were at great risk for infection and it was urgent that we deliver ASAP. My dr encourages patients to walk around and do whatever they want and what feels right. I pushes almost sitting up with my husband holding one leg and I held the other knee.

i was thinking the same i wach those programmes all the time and was shocked that the midwifes just gave them an epidural on all of the women in labour...

in england they send you home if your less then 4 cm they wont give you an epidural unless you ask and if there is a surgon available and our baby is kept with us at all times i noticed on the show the babies are kept in a room all together id hate that..

I know my dr will make u wait if things arelong normal with ur pregnancy. I was dilated to a 5 for over a week and still had to be induced with number 2.  I was induced with all 3.  My dr wanted me to do the pushing part laying down because she was worried about cord prolapse after my water broke. With number 3 I had to have an amino infusion for that reason to float the cord back up.(I don't remember having it done, dh told me about it almost a week later!) But before all that with number 3 I sat in the rocking chair most of my labor which was nice compared to my other 2 where I wasn't allowed to move at all but I had blood pressure issues too. As far as pushing with the stirrups I found them helpful if I needed to rest my legs a bit.  I think those teen mom shows they go early because of their age they are considered high risk.  My friends daughter was 15 and having a baby and they told her at the first signs of labor come in.  I am glad I was induced with all mine, waiting like that would have killed me lol I don't like surprises!!!!
