Why do I keep dreaming that I'm extremely stoned?

In the past 4 months I've been having dreams in which I am incapacitated due to being extremely high on pot.  They happen within the first hour of falling asleep.  In the dream my mind is clear, but I can't stand or walk - or I keep falling to the floor.  I then struggle to "act sober" so no one will notice how messed up I am.  In one dream I thought I was going to OD and I allowed an ambulance to be called as I was sure I was going to have a seizure.

I should note that I don't take drugs; I wasn't drinking; and I haven't smoked pot in over 10 years - except - I did smoke once after having the dreams a couple times & strangely enough, I reacted in real life like I had in the dreams - tunnel vision, fighting not to pass out - this was on a couple puffs of home grown!

Otherwise, I'm a healthy 50 year old and I can't think of anything else weirdly associated - other than the last time I noticed before I fell asleep that I had like 5 mild "exploding head" incidents.  The other thing is, when I wake up from the dreams I still feel a bit light headed.

Is this just some weird recurring dream? Or is it a symptom of some physical issue I should get checked out?  Thanks!!

Hello and hope you are doing well.

In the initial phases of the sleep cycle and while awakening, we tend to be more conscious or alert. If we study the brain waves at these phases they tend to show the alert wave pattern, this could cause the awareness. If it is not interfering with your sleep schedules you don't have to worry. If it persists or is troublesome consult your doctor for assessment.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Wow, I can't believe I found this post after 8 years. I'm the one who posted the question. I must have posted it on another board too, because I remember reading a response from a doctor who suggested that I might be pressing on a nerve while I'm sleeping. I am frustrated that I can't find it now, but I seem to remember it involving my temporomandibular joint and possibly my inner ear. I used to sleep on my side with one arm folded under my head/neck area so this made sense. I stopped sleeping like this and the dreams also stopped! (Once I asked my dentist about this and he acted like I was crazy. Thanks for trying to help!)
So, how is it going now?  What is the latest to the situation?
Since making that one change, it's never happened again.
So your sleeping position was causing excessive dreaming?
