Frightened of Colonoscopy

Hello,

Very sorry if put this in the wrong forum.

I'm 25, have had IBS or what I thought was IBS for years until now the consultant at the hospital now believes it is colitis or bowel cancer (yay). I was meant to have to have a colonoscopy a couple of weeks back, but I put it off as I'm far too petrified of having a colonoscopy. Can't work out whether it is because of the actual procedure, results or both!

Do I really need a colonoscopy? There is blood, muscous and lots of it at times, but could this be allergy related like celiac or lactose? Or any other reason? Had this for about 2 years now, but until recently always put the bleeding down to IBS.

My 'routine' changes from constipation to sudden "I need to go NOW" without any warning and really painful. I do get abdominal pain, but I also have fibromyalgia so it could be that? Does this sound like colitis? Or I have just got a very difficult digestive system that doesn't need a colonoscopy and maybe a better diet?

Go through with it. It could possibly save your life or it could help them help you.
Ask for sedation, it helps A LOT. I have had a total of 23 colonoscopies in the past 8-9 years. I never once did it without sedation, I am still alive and well!

When you get there, tell them you are nervous. They will try to do what they can to keep you relaxed and calm.

The prep is worse the the procedure. Good luck!

Go ahead and have the colonoscopy its scarier not knowing what's going on then knowing the truth. I had one  2 years ago were found I had ulcerative colitis. It was hard to swallow it first but at least I knew what was wrong and how I was going to fight.  and upsetting your stomach even more

Yes, have the colonoscopy. It is really not that bad I promise you. The results are scary yes, I have been through that many times, but you must. You are young. The chances of cancer is slim, Im sure but you must get this done. You many not NEED IT but you are getting offered a chance to find out if you potentially have a serious issue, even though is probably isnt, just please get it done and let us know how you get on.
