sinus arrhythmia or bigeminy?

Hello,

When my heart has low beats per minute (resting), it gets the rhythm what I describe "BEAT-beat [pause] BEAT-beat [pause], and so on ... Now what I mean with this is:
BEAT is more forceful one, comes after 1.5 seconds pause;
beat is very light and quick one, comes right after BEAT in 0.5 seconds.

The rhythm continues until I start moving around (to increase the heart rate).

I'm on Nebilet (Nebivolol) for slightly elevated blood pressure. I'm 24 years old male.

On holter monitor they mentioned "sinus arrhythmia", but when I google about my case, it seems to me more like a "bigeminy" (where normal beat is followed by premature atrial/venticular beat). They also found 105 supraventicular extrasystoles in my holter as well..

Now, what is this rhythm - a bigeminy or sinus arrhytmia? What is the most effective treatment for this?

Thank you!

Hi. Just to put your mind at rest - I get frequent PVCs at times and last year went to  A and E (ER) with bigeminy,ie. every other beat is a pvc. I had it for a few hours. The cardiologist was not at all concerned, said I could go home, and did not need to go back if it happened again. Even thousands of PVCs a day seem to be considered benign if you have had your heart checked out. Your heart beats 100,000 times a day, so most people will have PVCs at some point. If they are causing you anxiety or discomfort, many people find that cutting out all caffeine helps,reducing alcohol, and eating smaller meals can help too.

Hello. Thank you for your question.

Sinus arrhythmia is a benign finding that should not cause symptoms.

The "extra-systoles" is another way for describing a PVC, or premature ventricular contraction. That can cause symptoms and is usually treated with beta blockers like you are on. For severe cases, different antiarrhythmics (with more potential side effects) can be tried. When that doesn't work electrophysiologists (cardiologists with special training) can perform an invasive procedure called an "ablation".

If your holter demonstrated bigeminy it probably would have been interpreted that way. Bigeminy occurs when a normal beat is following by a PVC in a continuous pattern.

Thank you,
Dr S
