Severe Reactions

I was told I have no vitamin d at all in my system. They tried from 50,000 to 100 iu's and I get severe reaction. Lethargic, severe muscle pain, Can't function when I take it. The Dr. actually gave up on me and said he didn't know what to do. Never been tested to see what can be causing it. I am one step from cirrhotic liver due to hepc. Just finishing the cure for the hepc , so far I am cured ,will know for sure the end of feb. No one in my family has had MS. My Mom had minus thyroid symptoms, Diabetes is in my family but been checked several times and I don't have it. My muscle pain in my legs and feet get s so severe I scream and cry hysterically for over and hoyr sometimes. I due have spinal issues from a very bad accident. Just wondering if anyone has had such severe reactions to vitamin that they almost had to call an ambulance.

I am so sorry you are going thru so much. I too have other issues beside myself , my husband is stage 3 emphysema. I have a grandson with severe autism and asbergers syndrome. I honestly just don't know what to say anymore, I'm just so glad there is a part somewhere inside of me that refuses to give up. I even argue with myself and say why do I even bother. We just gotta keep getting up and brushing ourselves and deal with it anyway we can. I will keep trying to improve my life a lil bit at a time its about all I can do, and keep the hope going that one day I'll look back and say wow that was another rough time in my life, I have had many. I hope you have a very dear close person in your life that you can at least talk to to get stuff off your mine so it doesn't eat you alive. I am blessed in that way I have many. Not one that lives close but still always there for me.

I am in the same Vitamin D situation. My endocrinologist said I have no vitamin D at all in my body and I have been a mess for a long time. I have so many symptoms its ridulous. I have many other problems though. My doctor and the nurse said they have never seen it that low. It has taken over my life. I thought it was my thyroid but that came back ok with the dose of meds on which is pretty high at 175mcgs. I don't have a life  right now and I haven't for quite a while..Between my thyroid, no vitamin D, Chronic migraines, quitting smoking and two back to back knee surgeries, I was down for almost a year and gained 80 pounds in two years. I have never weighed as much as I do now in my life. I was already depressed but that socked me in the deep hole. Did I mention that on top of all this, my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 24 and almost died during a week in CCU.He is a brittle diabetic which means its a pretty much impossible for him to get it under control. He is 30 now and still living with us because it's not safe for him to be on his own. I am scared to death every morning that he won't wake up. It is a horrible name for it but they call it "dead in the bed" syndrome. It happens when blood sugar goes to low and they don't feel it and wake up or they are already so low when they wake up that they cant move to get something to correct it. He always has supplies for this in arm's length from his bed. However if he is so out of it from the low he could just pass back out and that would be his last moments. I would die if I lost my son. My life is filled with stress and now this stupid vitamin D is killing me. I cannot take much more.

My first sentence says I was told I have absolutely no vit d in my system the Dr. told me he had never seen anyone with none. I went to a Dr. he tried 50,000iu's a week by the second day I couldn't even lift my head let alone get out of bed. I called he told me to stop taking it. He tried 25,000 same thing happened. I have even gone to 200 iu's a day and my whole body swells I get extreme pain and can barely do anything. And the weird thing is my sister has the same exact problems with it. I know I need it but its like being poisoned when I take it. And yes it was vit d3. And if you read I have many other problems. I have 9 diseases so not easy for me.

sorry for your liver disease. LIVER disease, with HEP C, compromises your ability to absorb and process vitamins, most vitamins go to the liver for processing, so it make sense the liver damage caused by hep c, would cause malabsoprtion. 50k-100k IU seems very high, but you never told us what level your VIT D was when you were tested

Ok everyone keeps saying take magnesium wit the vit d . Well I also have severe IBS do you realize what magnesium does to someone that has that. I have tried and its no fun living in the bathroom especially when your sacrum and tailbone are not in the right area due to a severe car accident and then falling around 3 yrs ago and making things 20x worse. I go for spinal procedures constantly due to this. My tailbone ended up wrapped around my ganglion of impar which makes extreme pain everytime I go. I have to get an rfa done on that every 9-12 months to keep my sanity when I go to the bathroom. Yes I'm a walking basket case just tryig to survive and have a halfway decent life. I should've been in a wheelchair yrs ago but refuse to give in. As of right now eveytime I take and form of vit d my body swells, and the pain gets excrutiating . The weird thing to me is my sissy has the same issue. I keep wondering if we could've inherited a reason for this. It would cost a fortune for me to go to a lot of different Drs. to find out.And we really can't afford it with all te copays we are paying on for spinal procedures and our meds. Even with blue cross / blue shield fed my hubby pays 195 bucks a month just for his meds. Ok I'm goin off track and ranting. Just feel like I don't know what to do anymore, sigh. Thnx for listening to my rant.

Excerpt from Know the Importance of Taking Enough Magnesium with Your Vitamin D...

"Vitamin D, just like all other nutrients, works in harmony with several other nutrients to perform its many functions. Most importantly, vitamin D requires and 'uses up' magnesium to convert from supplements or sun into its active form in the blood. As such, it is a big mistake to simply take large doses of Vitamin D without taking the need for magnesium into consideration.

Yet this is exactly what is happening in most cases and it is causing a lot of people to have problems that they believe are due to side effects of Vitamin D- or even worse they believe they are experiencing an overdose. Such a huge number of people have subtle magnesium deficiency that some researchers and doctors are calling magnesium deficiency an epidemic, and anyone with even a mild or 'subclinical' magnesium deficiency will have this deficiency amplified when Vitamin D is taken.

This is creating some uncomfortable 'Side Effects of Vitamin D' that are actually symptoms of an induced magnesium deficiency! Some of the magnesium deficiency symptoms being attributed to Vitamin D are:

Headaches
Insomnia
Jitteriness
Muscle Cramps
Anxiety
Heart Palpitations
Constipation

While there are always going to be those who simply can't tolerate taking Vitamin D supplements for one reason or another, the good news is that the vast majority of these problems can be prevented and even reversed by getting clinically significant amounts of magnesium - while you are getting your Vitamin D from pills or from the sun."

I have been told before I should see an endocrinologist. I am just now trying to calm down a little from going thru a trial for the hepc ,as of now I am cured but won't be officially cured for another 3 months. Also was in a bad car accident and messed up my spine a lot. Been going for many spinal procedures, for awhile there I felt I was gonna lose it between the trial taking 6-9 tubes of blood every 2wks and the sedative for the procedures. I even ended up in hospital for one day cause I thought I was having heart attack. Just gonna let my body rest for awhile now , and finish up with the spinal stuff . After that then I'll start on 'all' my other health issues, I have so many. I do thank you for all the info and thank everyone else too.

... oops, hit the post before finishing.

So in my case, simply adding vit-D/calcium/etc supplements doesn't help much. Anyway, this is just a thought that may or may not be relevant in your situation. Just something that you can consider and maybe even see an endocrinologist about. Good luck.

Unfortunately your issues maybe more complex than simple vit-D deficiency. Given that your chronic hep-c is advanced and you're almost cirrhotic, you should have your doctor determine how congested your liver is from a bile flow/production standpoint. Without a normal bile metabolic process, you maybe dealing with a chronic malabsorption problem wrt fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients.

In addition, if your liver disease is partly cholestatic, there are other subtle issues that the doctors are still trying to understand that can cause hepatic osteodystrophy. I have ESLD from a primary cholestatic liver disease and I suffer from vit-D deficiency with severe osteoporosis while being relatively young, male and very active (at least I was). I do have other AI issues as well but this is a known secondary problem wrt to my liver disease. And my bones/joints ache from head-to-toes, my feet are so bad that walking is a problem some days.

With regard to your lactose intolerance, there are other milks that you can drink that contain no lactose - soya, coconut.  As your doctor if he can  prescribe lactose free milk.

IBS can be caused by many things.  Intolerance to some foods, stress and anxiety and some medications.

If you do suffer from stress and anxiety, do some relaxation techniques and breathing exercises to help you to relax.  It is very hard, I know, especially when you are in constant pain.  But relaxation techniques will also help for you to cope a little with that.   As your doctor to refer you to a physiotherapist so that they can give you specific exercises to do to strengthen your muscles.  This will help to support the bones.

Best wishes.

I don't take any supplements at the moment and I don't need any.  My blood test recently for Vitamin D was adequate.

I used to take lots of supplements some time ago and my doctor told me to stop taking them as they won't help.  He was right.  Of course if your body is lacking in certain minerals and vitamins, then one should take supplements if the diet is insufficient to provide this for optimum health.

Are you medically qualified to recommend one vitamin compared to a different one?

Being out in the fresh air is therapeutical.

I'm also unsure about tanning booths, however, they DO produce UV rays... and theoretically as such, that should be sufficient catalyst in producing adequate Vitamin D levels in the body.

But, I'd sooner opt for either D3 supplements (10 000 IU per gel cap at minimum) or actually exposing my back to the sun for 10 or 15 mins.

As for K2... I recommend K2 as MK-7.
It seems to stay in the body for 3 days and is the best form one can take... though if you want your body to generate this vitamin itself... then you could consume Natto (which is apparently not really pleasing to the western taste buds).

I read the whole article about Vitamin D2, D3, and Vitamin K, Vitamin E too.

It also says that these vitamins are fat soluble and need fat to be absorbed.
It also mentions that you do need to expose quite a large area of body to the sunshine and not just your hands and face and of course you do need to take into account when using sun blocks.

I was rather intrigued about Vitamin K, which is the vitamin that allows blood to clot.

Personally I would not recommend using any tanning booths.  Not sure if the body would make Vitamin D when being exposed to tanning booths.

Vitamin D is crucial for not just bone health but also innate and adaptive immunity.
Practically every cell in your body has a Vitamin D receptor.

As for you experiencing problems with supplements... it is possible that using Vitamin D expresses these issues because your body is trying to repair itself.
Sometimes the regeneration process manifests itself as things getting worse before they get better.
Your body could have adjusted to little or no Vitamin D inside and when you DO actually get some, you encounter problems.

Also, supplementation with Vitamin D should really be done by using D3 (active form), and not Vitamin D2.
D2 is a synthetic form and has been noted not to exhibit same beneficial effects on the body as D3.

Another thing to note is that an important co-factor with D3 is vitamin K2 (as MK-7).
It is necessary to shuffle calcium into the proper areas of the skeleton.
Other co-factors include magnesium and selenium (both can be obtained in high quantities by eating about 4 to 6 Brazillian nuts per day).

Finally:
Dosing.
Not everyone will tolerate high doses of Vitamin D well, though I've seen that you wrote that you also tried using 100 IU as well - which is nothing, and you still say you experienced pains.

My recommendation for Vitamin D3 dosing would be the following:
1. Take 10 000 IU of Vitamin D3 immediately after a meal.
2. Take Vitamin K2 with D3 (though K2 can be ingested once every 3 days)
3. Supplement with Vitamin D3 (10 000 IU) every day.

Alternatively, you can try going out into the sun and sun tan for about 10 to 15 mins if you are light skinned so your skin can generate 10 000 IU.
If you are dark skinned, you might need 2 to 4 times more sun exposure to get same amount of Vitamin D3.

Finally: If you desire to give supplementation one more time, you can try setting aside about 7 to 14 days for this and see how it pans out taking 10 000 IU of D3 with K2 per day.

Although, it wouldn't surprise me that the medications might be responsible for this vitamin D problem you seem to be experiencing.

At any rate... diet alone is NOT a good source of Vitamin D.
I'd sooner ask you to go out into the sun and get some sun rays.. or alternatively, use tanning booths with UV rays (no more than 10 mins per session - without sunscreen of course).

I am sorry to hear of your ill health problems.

I suggest that you make an appointment to see a different doctor for a second opinion with regard to the dosage of the vitamin D.  It may also be a good idea to get a blood test done to check the levels to make sure that the results are correct.

My aunty was prescribed with Vitamin D and calcium (the body needs Vitamin D to help absorb calcium) for osteoporosis (thinning of the bones).  I do not know the strength of Vitamin D that she was on, but she suffered with side effects with pain and swelling in her hands and had to stop taking the vitamin.

It may be that the dosage is too high for you to take all in one go.  Where you OK on the lower dosage?

Vitamin D is important, because lack of it at a young age can cause Rickets.  Rickets in adults is known as osteomalacia or soft bones.   I do not know whether you can get rickets as an adult or whether it is a condition that is got when you are a child that carries on into adulthood.

With regard to you muscle pain in your legs and feet, you do need to get that looked into.  It may be due to the lack of vitamin D, or from other causes.  You may have a problem with the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments lack of other minerals or it may be referred pain from elsewhere, like knees, hips or lower back.

I suggest that if you have not had a bone density test done or any imaging of your knees/hips/lower back (especially if you know that you have arthritis in these joints), that you ask your doctor to refer you to get these tests done.

Check out the website for foods that contain Vitamin D.  Here is one link for you:
http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/10-foods-containing-vitamin-d/

Foods containing Vitamin D:

Breakfast cereals are fortified with Vitamin D;  Butter and milk have small amounts;

Shiitake and Button Mushrooms, the dried versions of shiitake mushrooms are high in vitamin D

Mackerel;
Sockeye Salmon;
Herring;
Sardines (One small tin can of sardines will provide you with approximately 70% of your daily needs);
Catfish;
Tuna (eat 3 ounces of tuna daily for 50% of your vitamin D needs;
Cod Liver Oil;
Eggs (eating one egg daily will provide you with approximately 10% of your daily needs);
Sunshine.  When our skin is exposed to the sun, our liver makes the Vitamin D.  But I do not know how well your liver would be able to function as you do have a problem with your liver.
