Fear of treatment!!

Ok folks, this is a spin off from another thread I posted. To give you a quick recap: last month I experienced horrible stomach pain, that spread to my back, ribs and chest. I scheduled an appointment with my GI. He completed a colonoscopy/endoscopy and found antral gastritis, a hiatal hernia, and H Pylori. He prescribed a PPI, Amoxicillin, and clarithromycin for the Pylori. I also went to my local health food store and purchased Mastic Gum, DGL, and Manuka Honey. All of my pain is gone, I use an acid reflux pillow to help me sleep, I do have occasional reflux in the morning but tums knocks that out. To date, I haven't taken any of these things (except the honey. Here's my dilemma: I have serious emetophobia and all of the above list nausea and vomiting as a side effect. What am I supposed to do?? I am never sick, I mean I never catch the common cold (most likely due to my phobia)so being sick for a month is really taking a toll on me. Does anyone have any suggestions? What's a girl to do? I mean I know it's all mental and I don't know if I will experience any of these symptoms but I'm telling you my phobia is debilitating

Don't go overboard with the Tums -- it's basically a form of calcium that you can't absorb and too much repressing of stomach acid forces the stomach to make more, as it needs acid to digest minerals and protein.

Hey Paxiled, have you taken Mastic Gum? If so, did you experience any side effects?(No matter how small)

Thank you for the response. I was thinking some of the same. I mean I am not it pain, but I also don't want it to come back. I haven't taken anything besides Tums so I think I will just stay on this course until my 3 week follow up with the GI. Thanks again

First, realize that when it comes to natural remedies most of the side effects are largely theoretical.  This is because either there aren't very many side effects worth reporting or nobody's reporting them.  This is logical, because most doctors don't report drug side effects either -- most of the reports come from hospitals.  I've personally taken all three and never suffered any side effects at all, and I managed health foods stores for 18 years and never heard of anyone reporting any side effects.  Manukka honey is just another form of honey -- bees pollinating a particular plant that happens to produce a unique antibiotic other honeys don't have.  DGL is just a form of common licorice, with the part taken out responsible for most of the side effects commonly reported from licorice (mostly high blood pressure).  Mastic gum is just a gum resin, like so many others used to thicken foods and chew on.  But if I were feeling better without taking anything, I probably wouldn't take anything.  But that's another issue.  Finding h. pylori doesn't tell us as much as you think it does -- it might mean a lot, but it might mean nothing, as h. pylori passes through everyone all the time.  Usually you know it's found a nice home and settled in permanently when you get ulcers, which you don't have, so it's hard to know how serious this is.  Nobody on here is qualified to say, that's for sure.  And you're gastritis means you have inflammation, but doesn't say why.  Could be something commonly found in everyone for all I know -- like bad discs in the back -- everyone has them, most people will never know it because it doesn't bother most people.  Usually all these problems are from dietary problems and a die-off of your probiotics.  At any rate, whatever you decide, I hope it works and solves your problem.
