what is the best way to lower bad cholesterol without medication?

It isn't really medication as opposed to a natural supplement you can buy, but my doctor prescribed red yeast rice. It has worked great for my cholesterol and I have been off any prescribed medication for a few years now. Not sure if it will work for everyone. I buy mine at Costco.
