Coffee & Cirrhosis

Have any of you heard of the recent study released showing significant improvement in fibrosis for those who drink 3+ cups/day of caffeinated coffee?  I've never been much of a coffee drinker, but I'm thinking of giving it a shot!
I was diagnosed with end stage Cirrhosis (without having a biopsy) in October 2017.  I dramatically turned my life around and my last upper GI revealed significant reduction in once was prominent esophageal varices.  I'm not going to sit here and claim to have a cure for cirrhosis.  I struggle daily with keeping my ascites under control and being on a regimented diet, but I've never had to have my stomach drained of fluid (although I came dangerously close to it back in October).  Since then I started blogging to try to document my journey and help anyone else who is suffering along the way.  Feel free to visit midliferevelations.com.  Contact me there if you need someone to talk to or bounce ideas off of.  I've met other good people from the board this way.  There is no need for us to suffer alone when there are others out there who understand what we're going through.

I'm getting a coffee pot and giving it a go for a few months just to see what happens (it can't hurt).  Keep in mind  you can't load up on sugary creamers, mocha late, etc.  I have regular coffee with Stevia (instead of sugar) and going to use a small amount of sugar-free coffee mate.

I also found the article you mentioned.  Most of the article does refer to prevention of cirrhosis, but the first paragraph said something about reducing fibrosis.  I've found others which say coffee can help prevent additional fibrosis (aka, the liver getting worse).
Also, I found this study:
http://www.mdalert.com/article/new-data-show-coffee-reduces-hepatic-fibrosis-in-patients-with-liver-disease.

Let me clarify that this could all just be smoke and mirrors (who knows) but it doesn't hurt to consider it.

Well the headline of many of the articles have been a bit misleading I haven’t seen anything new but I will keep my eyes peeled

Just did another quick search I think they are just rehashing the same information

“Liver health: A review that combined the results of nine studies found that drinking more coffee is associated with lower risk for cirrhosis.”

This was from 3 days ago

So they’re still taking about a lower risk of developing cirrhosis not seeing anything about reducing fibrosis so far.

Yes there was a study in 2014 to that effect, but there has been a more recent one that I believe suggesting that coffee consumption can reduce the severity of fibrosis and may contribute to the repair of liver tissue.  I saw some reports come out about this dated June 11th (and earlier) this year.  My mother contacted me because she saw this on the news the other day.  Again, not claiming to be a guru, but I figure it couldn't hurt to try.

Found this from 2014

“Drinking coffee linked to decreased liver cirrhosis death risk. Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis is the 11th cause of death in the US, killing nearly 32,000 people in 2010. But now, researchers are suggesting that drinking two or more cups of coffee every day can reduce the risk of death from liver cirrhosis by 66%”

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis by liver biopsy in Jan 2008. Had grade 3 varicies banded in 2012.

Scant ascities detectable on ultrasound and mild edema. That’s about it. I had Hep c  for 37 years cured May 2017

This is compared to a general population so I don’t think it is so much about regression but rather prevention.
