I think they always say to take Ibuprofen before the test.  Take a large dose, I took 800mg.  Also try hard to relax and breath through it.  I had an HSG and it barely hurt, only cramped a little.  However, I had a sonohystogram (with saline and an ultrasound instead of HSG which involves oil and an x-ray).  The sonohystogram was the worst pain ever, but I was tense before it and didn't relax.  I also think the doctor wasn't as good as my previous one who had done the HSG.  She went too fast, the doctor should be slow and gentle.  If you tell your doctor about your anxiety they may give you something to help you relax, but then you'll probably need a driver.

HSG doesn’t involve a speculum. It’s a test to make sure your tubes are clear. Please check with the facility doing the procedure. Sometimes they reccemt taking something like Motrin to help with the cramping. Good luck!
