Can sun light damage the retina if I had my eye dilated for an eye exam?

I had my pupils dilated for an eye exam. When I left the clinic, it was midday and the sun was shining. I could barely open my eyes. It was really painful. I had to cover my eyes with my hands, look through the narrow space between my fingers, with my eyes squinched and constantly blinking. Could the sun light damage the photoreceptors in my retina? Is was midday and next to the equator. The sun light was as strong as can be.

No, I'm sure it was uncomfortable but it will not damage your eyes.

Edit: I know the sun can damage the retina if you stare at it, but I didn’t look directly at it. I would like to know if it’s plausible to get retinal damage from just opening my eyes and looking at the side walk and my surroundings at the peak of solar irradiance, with my pupils fully dilated.
