Hepatic steatosis may be associated with alcoholic liver disease or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Alcoholic liver disease is caused by excess alcohol consumption, whereas the nonalcoholic variant is related to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Other relatively common conditions associated with fat accumulation in the liver include viral hepatitis and/or certain medications. Rarer associated conditions include dietary/nutritional abnormalities and congenital disorders.
Hepatic steatosis is common and can be reversible in some instances.
