Chronic Cough In 5 Year Old

Hi-

My son is 5 years old. At age 6 months he was diagnosed with reactive airway disease then at age 3 years they went ahead and declared it asthma. He has seen pulmologist, been allergy tested, checked for CF, hes had ear tubes put in twice and also his adnoids removed twice, because they grew back the first time. Hes on daily meds and breathing treatments.

Every fall he develops what seems a cold and the cough starts and never ends until the following summer. He has been put on cingular, zyrtec, flonase, and ilbuteral for everyday use. He also is on regular steriods. The ENT, the pulmologist, his ped not one can tell us why he coughs so much.

Its a dry cough that is constant. He does retract and vomit due to the spells. We went to the ER last night and they told us he has croup and gave him a steriod and sent him home. He is no better, infact seems worse, yet everyone says there is nothing they can do.

Im at a loss and I just want my son to be able to function without this cough. Yes he has his good days and its not constant, but now that he is in kindergarden its affecting school and his quality of life. I just believe something else is causing it and not asthma.

Has anyone had a simular problem and found a solution. Thank you all so much! Oh and his allergy testing came back fine. Pollen raised alittle, but not to the warning level. Thanks

I know this is MANY years later, but did anything ever come of this?  Was your son ever diagnosed with anything?  I ask because this is the exact same issue we have with my 5 year old.  CF tear was negative.  They are testing her for PCD now but she doesn’t fit the bill.  Just desperate for some answers.  Thanks

My son is 6 years old, and has too gone through all you have wrote here. He did test positive to dog/cat dust, and mold also.  Kindergarten was an awful hard year, and now 1st grade we are headed in a quite similar path.  I can say his episodes of coughing are not lasting as long, but I think that is b/c we know just to head straight to er, or doc for steroids. In 12/07 we went to hospital expecting croup/asthma, but the xray showed pneumonia in left lung also.  Now 1/08 he is sick yet again.   I too am lost , if you have any new info or find out anything please let me know. ***@****.  thanks
