A 3 year Constant Throbbing pain under Crown Please Help

I have had a toothache for over 5 years but it wasn't until 2005 that I finally was brave enough to see a dentist.  The first dentist said oh I think its your metallalic filing you need a new filing... okay I got a new filling.. it chipped after only 2 weeks and severe pain returned... I saw another dentist... he did the bite test and said I have a cracked / fractured tooth he doesn't think it went to deep and that a crown will fix it.... okay the temporary crown still made me sensitive to hot & cold, and hurt biting down but when I went in for the permanant crown I was told I didn't need a root canal and the permanant crown would end my pain... okay... disaster.. he screwed up my bite and had to adjust several teeth bc. of it.. and the pain is the same..   All in all I have been to 3 dentists, 1 endodontist all doctors say my xrays are normal with no signs of root canal needed or abcess 3 years since the crown.  I have CONSTANT throbbbing pain which has intesified over time its as if my heart rate can be felt in my gums above the tooth. Biting down hurts, when push on the crown towards the inside of my mouth it hurts... The endodontist said a root canal may or may not end the pain since signs show I may still have a cracked / fractured tooth... I am sick of this and I feel lost... I am sick of being in pain and miserable I don't know where to turn to next or what to do.  Has anyone had this problem if so, what ended the pain?

Seeing a prosthodontics who is competent managing occlusion issue is advised. If occlusal adjustment is not effective, you may need to see an orofacial pain specialist.

I ended up canceling my appointment since that endodontist was not on my dental plan.  Unbelievably, my pain has lessened a little.  1-1/2 weeks after my normal dentist adjusted my bite, it seems to be having some effect.  Keep in mind that amount of sleep and amount of biting can lessen or increase the pain sensation.  After reading all the posts on here, I think the less I do, the better.  Although, the stories on here are all unresolved incidents.  People with happy endings will not appear here.  If my pain ever becomes unbearable, I will simply have the tooth removed.  I will not go through the pain and expense of a root canal and another crown just to wind up still in pain.  That would be my advice to you as well.  Listen to yourself, not others or dentists.  In the end, you are the one that has to live with the decision.  I think that's what makes this process so difficult.  The medical industry at large wants to step in and do what they think is best.  They have ceased to listen to the patient, and I do not believe it is out of concern for our welfare.  It is an overwhelming fear of not wanting to be sued.  I believe unneccesary procedures happen often under this umbrella of fear.  Good luck to you too.  Let me know what course of action you pursue.  With our matching #3's, I feel as if we are kindred spirits.

My goodness same tooth... tooth 3 on the top right side for me... please do fill me in on how your visit goes... I am afraid as well to see another "specialist" I didn't really want my tooth removed as I already shelled out over $1000 for that tooth alone, and a root canal well isn't 100% effective I have read some horror stories on here... so I am lost as to how to proceed.. it hurts as I type so I can feel your pain.

Goodluck to you too... my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't have a solution, but I am faced with the same problem.  About a year ago,it began to hurt to chew on one side of my mouth.  My dentist just said my bite was off and adjusted several other teeth to make things better.  Things did not get better.  I've seen two other dentists, with no luck, and scary results.  The one guy thought it was something else, and adjusted that.  Mind you, he also exrayed me with out the lead apron.  Shouldn't he be turned in for that?  The other place referred me to an endodontist and found six other things they wanted to work on (can you say, "New Car").  Recently, the pain has gotten to the point where I can not even rub my tongue over the tooth.  I saw my original dentist last Tuesday, and she once again adjusted my bite.  I guess her rule is that if something doesn't work once, try it again.  She referred me to an endodontist, and I have an appointment Monday.  The tooth that bothers me is already crowned.  What I've learned from my year of dealing with this is that in all likely hood I have a fractured tooth under that crown and that is what is causing the pain.  Since neither of us has the syptoms of an absess yet, I assume you are probably dealing with the same problem.  I believe my only solution is to have the tooth removed.  Since it is number 3, I will not have anything put in.  Our options would be a bridge or an implant.  (Never, never, never, get implants.  They set steel into your jawbone, but what they neglect to tell you is that as you age, your jawbone can not keep that in forever, you will need to revisit all that pain again.)  A bridge has problems as well, but less intrusive.  If your tooth is in an area where it will show, maybe that would be an option for you.  Holes are not good, since your other teeth will shift, but since mine is on top, that is not too much of a problem.  That would mean that I would then have 10 real teeth and 10 crowns in my mouth.  I know tooth concerns seem minor to most in regards to heath, but it is very tied to our psyche, and affects us in a huge way.  I have moved around often, and am appalled by the barbaric level of dental care overall in this country.  I know that half of the work done in my mouth was premature, and probably unneccessary.  An old friend of ours just revealed to us that he has not been to a dentist in over 25 years.  I was shocked.  He says he has had no problems either.  I think after I resolve this issue I will not be going back to a dental chair ever again unless I have serious pain.  In my experience, they have all done nothing buy cause more problems in my mouth.  I feel taken advantage of and abused by the dental industry in this country.  And by the way, my normal dentist adjusted the bite on my pained tooth with out any sedative whatsoever.  Against my wishes as I was asking her to stop.  Is there no escape from the madness!  If I survive Monday, I'll let you know the outcome.  Good Luck!
