Getting herpes from Oral Sex

Ok I'm 26 and have been with my girlfriend for 2 years.  She has genital herpes but has only had a few outbreaks altogether.  I've have no STD's and for the first 6 months we used protection.  After that until now we stopped using protection( stupid i know) i guess because i know i'm going to spend my life with her.  Since we first got together she hasn't had an outbreak because she has taken Valtrex daily since then.  Also just recently i performed oral sex on her for the first time.  Now i haven't done that since my last girlfriend which was over 2 years ago and i know the tongue can be sore from doing it for awhile.  Well my tongue is a little sore underneath but i don't see any visible marks except for a little white piece of tender skin under the tongue where it connects to the lower part of my tongue.  I did this last night with her and was wondering what the chances were that i can get herpes from her by giving her oral sex or just having unprotected sex with her while she takes Valtrex and has no outbreak.  Also is there anything i can do or take to lower the chances of me getting it or is it inevitable that i will get it? Is there anyway to know when she's (shedding) ?  Please help, replies are greatly appreciated, Thanx

Your chances of getting oral herpes from her genital herpes are next to nothing.  Have you been tested for herpes, and does she know what type she has?  She could have type 1 or 2.  It won't make any difference as far as oral sex, but it will for genital sex.

If she has type 2 (and we'll just assume that for now), then the chances of you getting herpes from her if all you do is avoid sex during an outbreak is 4% a year.

If she is on daily valtrex, its 2% a year.

There is no way to know if she is shedding, but I wouldn't let it worry me.

There isn't anything you can do to prevent infection yourself.  Her taking valtrex is the best way to prevent this.

Now, if she has type 1, then the chances are even lower - some would say a lot lower.

You both should ask your docs for type specific IgG blood tests and find out what you each have.  If you have the same type, nothing to worry about.
