beta blockers and exercise

How does taking a beta blocker give you exercise intolerance?? Does that just mean your heart rate won't go up. Don't you get the same benefit from the exercise even if your heart rate doesn't go up??

Me967 is right !

beta blockers do slow the Heart rate down - I found it hard to work out and walk fast paced while on the beta blockers.  guess it depends on how high a dose your on !
and how slow your heart rate is.

can say I liked being on beta blockers - or any b.p med for that matter !

things change - As I use to work out daily and walk 4miles per day .. now I dont work out
and only walk 2 miles per day .. and slow real slow !!

I found beta blockers have alot of side effects -  waight gain  and hair loss.. so on
I gained waight , then lost it ..but when on these drugs , the waight came right back
again !   its like bounce back effect !

well hope I helped in some way....

I'm not the best one for answering this but, I will try.
From what I was told from my Dr. was that:  as long as you are on a beta blocker it keeps your heart rate down for whatever reason your Dr. has put you on it for.   You will not be able to reach your max predicted HR though (220-age=?) while on the beta blocker.

So YES to your question.  As long as you work up a sweat, or do some sort of cardio exercise, or just walking,  you are still getting a workout and bettering your health by being in shape.  So therefor you are going to benefit from working out.  I would check with your Dr. though before starting a exercise program though to be on the safe side.  Hope this helped;

Amy
