Hi there,

I also have perioral dermatitis and am 24 weeks pregnant. I've had this for 8 yrs or so. It comes and goes and at times is worse than others. Right now it's pretty bad!!! The original things I use do not work and I don't know what to do. I have the redness along with pimples on the left and right below my nostrils and left and right below my lips. It is so ugly and embaressing. Not only am I feeling fat and unattractive pregnancy my face is a mess!!! I do not have insurance, expect medical coverage for my pregnancy so I'm unable to go to a dermatologist. I have read that Erythromycin tablets and gel are effective and safe. Is this true? How long is the receovery period and what are the dosages? Is there anything I can do?

I am changing my toothpaste and soap to ones that do not have SLS. I read this is a good idea. I also read Cetaphyl is good to use, but it has SLS in it. This is confusing. I also read to just wash my face with water until the rash has cleared, then can use a safe cleaner. Please help!!! I also read apple cider vinegar is helpful and products by California baby. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Perioral dermatitis, a condition related to acne vulgaris, consists of red papules that may appear microvesicular that typically affect the nasolabial folds, perioral area or perioccular area. It usually affects women between the ages of 20 and 45.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perioral_dermatitis

It is commonly caused by the use of fluorinated topical glucocorticoid steroids to this area.

It is treated in a similar manner to acne vulgaris with tetracycline antibiotics or erythromycin but, without the use of topical steroids.

Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been reported to be helpful, although large studies have not yet been performed.

Roaccutane has been used in patients with severe perioral dermatitis with some benefit. Do consult with a dermatologist regularly.

Let us know if you need any other information.

Regards.
