I've had a Anal Abcess for the first time at age 48

This summer i recently had my first anal abcess at age 48. I'm pretty good health and I work on computers so I'm always sitting down alot. Anyway, I felt a bump on down in the anal area, it hurt when I sat down and pain increased over the next couple of days so bad i couldn't hardly sit down.  So I went to my doctor's and he said I had an anal abcess and I should get an operation.  Well at the time i didn't have medical benefits and I was going to be out of work in the next of couple of months so I didn't want to pay the $2,000.00 for the operation. Well the good news in that i'm back to work now with very good benefits.  However, my original abcess popped and drained. My doctor gave me antibotics to kill the infections.  Well two weeks later I started feeling pain in the anal area against and started to take warm baths and this one popped as well but was mostly blood and not much puss.  Well I put direct pressure on it with a gauge pad and it stopped bleeding and didn't hurt anymore.  Well that was in early august and I haven't had another abcess develop again since the second one ended.  I'm sure I have a fistula that developed and it drains puss and some minor bleed I keep it clean and it really doesn't bother me.  I treat it with cream when it itches the skin and I have been taking some natural antibotics, but it hasn't acted up again since and I keep it covered so it won't heal completely until it heals inside first.  However, since it really doesn't hurt should I still get surgery, i've had some friends who have had minor knee operations and have developed staff infections and in one case almost died, so i'm alittle worried about having an operation with the potention side effects.

In addition, to my post if a anal gland is causing this issue how long does it take for this gland to heal, if it will heal at all. it's been three months now, so i'm wondering if the cause will stop.
