How do I know if I have permanent damage caused by Chlamydia? (Recently diagnosed and took antibiotics)

Just recently I found out from my OB/gyn that I have a Chlamydia infection.  She gave me the prescription for the antibiotics, a one-dosage treatment and I took them the same day.  It was just yesterday so I won't know anything until I go back in about 6 weeks, but how do I know if it already caused permanent damage?  I've been with my boyfriend for a year and a half, and neither of us were with anyone else during that time, so I have no idea when I could have gotten it.  Also, I can't recall spotting or abdominal pain unless it was associated with menstruation.

Can someone please help?

He could just go to an std clinic, and say that you tested positive for chlamydia.  If he can get a copy of your results, and bring them in, or you go with a copy of your results, they should treat him.

Its standard CDC protocol.  I'm sorry no one is getting that - its STD 101.

hi

....just because a woman doesn't get pregnant right away doesn't mean she has scarring, etc. from a STD.

A transvaginal ultrasound can determine PID (pelvic inflammatory disease)..also a HSG, where they insert a catheter like thing into your cervix and pump some dye into your uterus watching for spill into the tubes can determine blocked tubes.

PID usually causes pain, severe pain.  Have you had a pelvic exam?

It would be very unusual that you had chlamydia and your lover never got it.

He didn't get treated yet... his Dr. said "no need" since he had NO symptoms and everything came back negative, so I told him how ignorant that was and he is going back...

It is frustrating - however, his doctor frustrates me more because I don't know why as a precaution he wouldn't prescribe him the medication... I don't know what else to do... And his Dr was never hesitant on prescriptions before, and he has been going to him for years...  Stressing me out!

1 - Yes,  either of those is possible.  Did he get treated just to be sure?

2 - Its possible, but not at all likely.

I'm sorry your doctor isn't calling you back - that's very frustrating.

Hi Aj,

Have a question regarding my previous post... after I took the antibiotics, I had a re-test to confirm the chlamydia had cleared, and it has.  At the same time, my boyfriend had blood and urine tests done to check for chlamydia and any other STI and everything came back negative.... now, as I said before, we've been dating for over a year and had no other partners since...

1) is it possible that he had a false negative or I had a false positive?

2) is it possible I could have brought it into the relationship, but he never got it?

I tried calling my Dr but not getting any return calls as of yet... any answer you could give me will help.

Thanks so much,
NLM

They can do a lap, but most doctors won't do surgery unless you need it done.  There is risk to any surgery, and I'd doubt your doctor would do it, nor would your insurance cover it.

You can check with your doctor though - he/she might find a way to justify it.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

I've read somewhere that there is a (mind my spelling) some kind of laproscopic where they make an incision above the belly button and go in with a camera to see if there is damage to the fallopian tubes.  If I'm not mistaken, the reason one can't get pregnant is because of the scarring that is blocking the tubes, right?

What I'm asking is if you know if that is the way to find out and if there are alternatives?  (Besides waiting until I try to get pregnant)

I just want to know as soon as I can to ease my mind - The stress of not knowing if I'm infertile is driving  me insane.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, there isn't any way of knowing if you have permanent damage until you try and get pregnant and can't.

Its a good sign that you haven't had any symptoms, though.

I know -its a lousy answer.
