I know this is an old post but I had to comment. Sandy828, I am so sorry to hear that you are suffering. I too suffer desperately with excessive period pain (i.e. secondary dysmenorrhea) as a result of PCOS. As a teenager, I tried endless natural remedies to relieve the pain and I had very little success. Now age 28, I know my body and what works for me. Unfortunately, the only remedy for me...is painkillers.

I studied pharmaceutical science in university and I would just like to assure you that taking painkillers for this condition is more safe than you think (once you follow the manufacturers instructions). There is a misconception about the use of natural products. There is a general assumption that because it is a ''natural'' product it is safe. This is not the case. There can actually be an increased risk associated with taking these natural remedies. The reason for this is that... in these extracts/herbs, there may be one therapeutic constituent that effectively works to treat a symptom or condition. However, this therapeutic molecule is accompanied by hundreds of other constituents that have no therapeutic effect. That said, these other molecules could have negative side effects in the body. In addition, these natural remedies are not regulated by the FDA or EMA. Thus, the companies that sell the product do not need to prove its efficacy, safety or purity. There is no way of knowing whether the therapeutic compound is intact and/or whether it is at an effective dose. Therefore, you really have no idea what you are actually taking?... whether it is safe? ....or whether it will even work????.

On the other hand, pharmaceuticals are heavily regulated. The manufacturers must prove the safety and efficacy of their products to regulatory bodies before approval, through years of research in pre-clinical and clinical trials. Hence, they are aware of potential side effects and complications (listed on the patient information leaflet). In addition, pharmaceutical batches are and must be extensively tested for purity before release to the general public. Thus, you know that what you are taking contains the pure ingredients stated on the box.

I would like to also explain that most drugs are generally a single therapeutic molecule extracted from a natural product. Yes, some are chemically synthesized...but typically the synthesized molecule is identical to or a derivative of the compound found in nature. For example, someone commented that willow bark has proven effective for relieving period pain. The reason for this is that willow bark contains salicin which is metabolised in the body to salicylic acid, a painkiller. Salicylic acid was found to be very harsh on the lining of the stomach, so acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) was synthesised from it, to reduce the side effects of the painkiller. If you asked me, I would prefer to take an Aspirin tablet than doing anything with willow bark. Especially because..... how can you tell what quantity of bark is a safe dose?....

I wanted to write this message because I would hate anyone to be afraid to take painkillers, thinking they were not safe. Do not let your PCOS rule your life and endure that horrific pain. Painkillers and oral contraceptives can help you.

I am not sure what part of the world you live in..... but in Ireland, I use Nurofen Plus, a painkiller, containing 200mg Ibuprofen and 12.8mg Codeine. You must be careful not to take it for more than 3 days in a row as codeine has additive properties. It is the only over the counter medicine that works for me and I could not function without it each month. Oral contraceptives, such as Dianette, for PCOS can help reduce the menstrual pain, maintain regular periods and lighten blood loss each month. I found Dianette did not agree with me so I had to stop taking it... but it may help you.

Apologies for the length of this message (or should I say essay). I hope I have reduced your anxiety about the use of painkillers. Once you follow the instructions on the packet exactly, painkillers are typically a very safe way to relieve period pain. I hope this message helps you or someone else. Best of luck.

Thank you. Your comment helped a lot in relieving my anxieties over pain killers. I've just discovered that i have PCOS the other day but have been suffering from this pain for weeks. I find it very hard to sleep. Tomorrow I'd be more reassured and hopefully will enjoy a much needed pain free sleep

I totally understand what you are going through as I have the same issues. I was able to get on bc and it helped a while but I started having problems I bled for nearly a month and hurt from head to my toenails!!! To ease your mind it can hurt even your bowels unless your body tells you it's more serious you're fine and your body WILL tell you if something else is wrong when it comes to that. On to relief...hot baths/showers, use natural pads no tampons AT ALL, moist a towel and heat it (I microwave it) and wrap it around you (i find it better than hearing pads AND thermal pads for muscle aches as I've tried it all) , massage the area gently if you can bear it sometimes I can't, drink herbal tea (hot without sugar or honey), lay in a comfortable position for you mine is on my back relieves pressure from my ovaries as I can definitely feel it, put a pillow under you or between your legs depending your position. Usually that works... But occasionally it doesn't that's when I put my feet in mildly cold water and as hot as I can bear towels around me and I get the room extremely dark. Then I do the first routine. It's awesome! I hope this helps!

i think i will go back to the docs cause this might sound weird but the pain is in my bowels, unless the cyst is pushing on my bowles that would make sence. i think im also going to have to give in and take pain killers, i have funny reactions to them like ALOT of drowsyness and the "runs", i never though of it like marijuana being a herb so herbs can do the same thing as pain killers so im just better off taking pain killers. ugh i give up. thankyou both x

When my pain gets really bad it almost feels like my tail bone has a cold tingly numb pressure like pain. It is the weirdest feeling. When it hurts really bad Allieve and Advill only take the edges off. I have found having my husband karate chopping it over and over. (massage not like break a block) helps a lot as well as placing a 20 Oz bottle between that area of my back and a hard chair especially while I'm at work.the pressure helps the pain some.

I was going to say the same thing as Trudie.  My back is absolutely killing me today and there's nothing I can really do about it.  Surgery is the only cure, so I've got to medicate the pain until they can do that.

If you're worried that there's some other cause of your pain, you should go to the Dr and see what he/she thinks.  Going to the emergency room as pain management doesn't sound like much fun.

As I said before, herbs are still medicine.  They all have an effect on your body, good or bad.  An example of this would be marijuana and the effects of using it.  In some instances it's used medicinally.  It is an herb after all!  ;)  Maybe you can try an herbal store and see what they have like willow bark.  It's ok for mild pain, but I gave up years ago and just took Tylenol or Motrin.  They worked much better and longer.

Unfortunately the pain of cysts is mostly because they are pushing on internal organs and there just isn't much that alternative medicine can do for that.  You are stuck with painkillers or eliminating the problem, which is going to take time.

Hi.  You might also want to try posting in the PCOS forum here on MedHelp.  I know that some people use biofeedback for migraine pain so that might be something to look into.  When I was going through my cysts I also found a glass of wine in the evening lessened my pain (or at least took my mind off it).  I also took lots of hot baths and used my heating pad.  I did need painkillers near the end because the cyst was too big and affecting my other internal organs.

With PCOS I believe birth control pills can stop you from ovulating and hence keep you from having the pain.  Good luck with everything.

Do you mean like acupuncture or chinese medicine?  Or do you mean like herbs and such?  Medicines started out in ancient times by our ancestors using hit or miss methods to see what herb or bark or root did what.  Natural things like willow bark and chamomile are still medicines and can be used for pain or sleep.

Just think of the pain medications as being like the antibiotics if you can.  They're taking care of something you can't take care of yourself.  There's no reason for you to be in pain if you don't have to.

Would a hot bath help?  Aromatherapy?    I've tried those and they help some, but I still need Tylenol or Motrin sometimes.

I sure hope you find something that works for you.
