38wk Update & GBS Question

I just got back from my doctor and I am still 2cm and 50% effaced...the same I've been for a while now. It's frustrating to not make any progress and be so uncomfortable!

I also got the results back of my GBS and it's positive. Any one go through this? I know I will need IV antibiotics during L&D, but what threat does it pose to my baby?

I wouldn't worry about it. My Midwife said it's very rare that a baby would even be affected by GBS. However, if it does affect a baby it's serious..She said this wasn't even tested for when I had my son 8 years ago.   Now that you know you have it just make sure they give you the antibiotics and you'll be ok. My sister tested positve for it and it all went well.

ya that internal exam hurt like a mother ****!!!!  I am also at at 2 and 50% effaced whatever that means.  I am in more pain than I was prior to the exam.  I spent yesterday limping around close to tears, bleeding.  Today I just ache but the bleeding stopped.

That makes sense about stopping the internal exams.. I am in pain today still from yesterday...  I know it isn't much pain compared to how labour will be but I'd rather go into labour feeling good and not starting the delivery while being sore from an internal exam...  I didn't realize that the amount of dilation is not an indication of when labour would start but I am finding from my internet readings that some girls go into labour at 0 dilation while others could be walking around at 3cm dilation for weeks and weeks before labour...

Oh and I had them stop doing internal exams on me at my visits.  The OB said it wasn't necessary and just b/c I could be dilated...well, it was no indication of when labor would start.

I decided to just forgo the internal exams (too uncomfortable/painful anyway) and just wait to the big ol' contractions come!

Just a thought....

As long as you get antibiotics, your baby is protected.  You are a carrier of GBS (positive only) and do not have an active infection.  The antibiotics keep you from passing it onto your baby.  The antibiotics are really for the baby, not you.

I'm not sure about the Nitrazine test... I have not even heard about that test. I think that they test for more things in the US than they do in Canada. Probably because you guys are paying for your health care. Since ours is free maybe they just do the minimum testing?  Sorry can't help you with that. All I know is that my doctor acts like GBS is no big deal. Only mentioned it the once.   Two of my friends had it with no complications to thier babies as well..

i may have mentioned that my brother's g/f had it (she just delievered 12/23) sorry if i too got mixed up.

my concern now is about 2 wks ago i was at l&d and told my nitrazine test came back positive that i was leaking fluid, but the levels around the baby were fine and i was sent home...now what role does that play with GBS?

im actually kinda upset that i didnt even see a doctor just a nurse practitioner so my questions weren't even answered :(

I have the GBS too. Didn't you mention that you had had this in your last pregnancy as well. I may be getting mixed up but I thought it was you who had mentioned that when I had posted...

I hear that there is a threat to baby but really only if the antibiotics are not given. If your water breaks you are supposed to get to the hospital right away and get the antibiotics asap. You are also supposed to be given the antibiotics a few hours prior to delivery as well..  I can't remember the exact amount of hours.. I know I'll end up going to the hospital early because I will be worried about not getting the antibiotics on time so I'm not too concerned with the time...  Hope this helps!
