Hi
Since your reply above, I had had a trans vaginal scan at 15 weeks in which my cervix measured 4cm. I had an abdominal scan at 20 which showed the cervix at 3.4cm. The doctor said this was "long and closed" and didnt seem worried but to put my mind at rest he would see me at 24 weeks also. Should I be worried about this shorter measurement? Could the difference in scan methods cause any difference in measurements?
Thanks
Hi!
According to the literature, your risk should be no greater than average unless you have had more than three d&c's (suction or otherwise). I have not personally seen it be a problem except in cases of late term abortions. I HAVE seen several problems with women who have had those procedures.
If you were my patient, I would measure your cervix with transvaginal ultrasound right now at 14 weeks and then again at 20 weeks. Depending upon what your cervix looks like on ultrasound, and what your symptoms are, I would then be tempted to measure it about once per month, watching for any shortening or dilating. Obviously, if we saw worriesome changes, surveillance would be more intense.
Also, just in case you are wondering about a cerclage ( a suture that is placed around the cervix like a belt), the literature does not suggest much of a benefit in a case like yours. I would probably only consider that if your cervix looked very short or open on ultrasound.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Guess what-you don't get to stop worrying when they're born!
Good luck!
