That's one problem.  We all react different to different types of medication.  Heck, there are people in this world that can't take any kind of opiate without not feeling well, so they can never take those.  (Boy do a lot of us wish we were them?)  Suboxone can be hit and miss more so than a lot of medication, although majority of people who use it responsibly, come out feeling great much easier than that at cold turkey.  But, the best option is cold turkey.  Then personally my opinion is that tapering is the next best option.  But, if you're like me, I've gone cold turkey more times than I can remember, and tapering is impossible for someone like me....I just never had the discipline to taper.  Then, and only then, should you consider something like Suboxone.

Now for you, MontanaGurl, have you tried to taper?  If you are like many of us and can't discipline yourself enough to only take so many a day without taking all of your script there is an option out there that not many people know about.  First and foremost you would need to involve your doctor.  Let them know, at least, that you would like to get off of your pain medication for good.  Tell them you would like to taper.  Let them know the truth...that you think you'll have a hard time only taking a certain amount, then lowering it eventually.  Your doctor can literally prescribe you an EXACT amount and you can have him literally give you "x" amount per day at the pharmacy.  I knew someone who was addicted to pain pills, told their doctor, and they did this.  This person had chronic pain, so to live and work in their everyday life they needed something.  So they could only get 4 a day (their prescribed amount by the doc) and that was it.  No more.  So, I'm sure a doctor would be willing to do this with a nice and easy/slow tapering plan.  Maybe give that a shot?  Wouldn't hurt.  Maybe try Suboxone again and take it steadily for a week or so to see if the headaches will go away?  No matter what...you should discuss these options with your doctor.  Good luck and God Bless.

dkwtd, I saw you asked me a question about Subxone on one of my posts.  I typed an answer there, but I wanted to make sure you saw it, so I'm going to paste the same response here, so hopefully you see it.  To those to don't know, dkwtd had asked me about how I went about getting on Subxone and whether or not I told the same doctor about my addiction and if the same doc prescribed me the Suboxone and whether or not I was embarrassed about it all....here was my response:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To tell you the honest truth....I never actually told my doctor how horrible my habit was.  I was up to 20 (even more sometimes) of hydrocodone a day at 10/325mg strength, and yeah, I guess overall I was embarrassed.  No one even close to me knew, so of course I didn't want to tell my doctor.  At one of my appointments with him where I received my usual script  for hydrocodone, I finally admitted a little something to him.  I had lied to him and told him on many of my appointments that I was taking 1 or 2 day breaks each week from the hydrocodone, but this appointment was a little different.  Yes, I still lied and said I was taking my breaks, but this time I told him during the last break or 2 that I took, I was feeling a bit edgy.  Honestly, I told him everything but the whole truth, but just saying a little bit and hinting to him that I may be having withdrawl symptoms he immediately mentioned Suboxone.  I was all excited inside that he actually mentioned it.  I played it cool and was like "maybe I'll think of that".  As soon as I pretty much took all of my prescription I called and made an appointment and specifically told the nurse I made an appointment with, that I wanted to start Suboxone.  I timed it to when I knew I would run out...actually the day after because technically you need to be in withdrawl for it to take the best effect.

Personally, if I had to go back, I wouldn't feel embarrassed at all, I would have no problem telling him the complete truth actually, because if you have at least a decent doctor (mine is actually a great guy) they will be more than willing to help you get off those pills.  But, if the anxiety of telling your doctor the complete truth bugs you maybe you can try what I did.  You can hint to your doctor that you took a day or 2 off of the medication and you weren't feeling well.....hinting to him that you're possibly going through withdrawls...you don't even have to say the word "withdrawl", you can say what I said.  "I took a day off of my medication and I felt a bit edgy" and then maybe he will mention something to help.  If your doctor doesn't specifically mention Suboxone, then you mention it.  Say something along the lines of "I did some research on the internet and I came across something about Suboxone".  You don't have to say you are experiencing withdrawls, but you can say "I am starting to get sick of taking these pain pills and I don't want to spend the rest of my life taking them".  From there your doctor will either help you go the Suboxone route or help you in another way...like a tapering plan.

For those out there who can't taper because if you have the pills in your posession (sp?) and you want to take them all, then there is a wonderful option.  You can literally only have your doctor prescribe you an exact amount each day.  So let's say you take hydrocodone and you're taking 4 a day.  You can literally have a prescription written to you to get just 3 hydrocodone a day.  Then down to 2 a day and so on.

dkwtd....my advice....tell your doctor the exact truth, because if you tell your doc that you are taking your pain medication responsibly, you may not get the exact help that you actually need.  If you tell your doctor that you have an addiction problem, then you will get the help you truly need.  Just my opinion.  And tell yourself that you will do exactly what your doctor says and do it 100% responsibly, because you will become better quicker.  If you have any other questions about Subxone or anything else that you want to specifically want to ask me, then feel free to send me a message.  Good luck and God Bless.

I speak from experience when I say that Suboxone is perfectly 100% ok for anyone taking hydrocodone.  Hydrocodone was my drug of choice.  Personally, I don't think Suboxone is a step up from Hydrocodone at all.  It actually isn't compared to hydrocodone one bit.  Going from Hydrocodone to Methadone is silly in my opinion, but if it has worked for someone then awesome.  I've taken just about anything that's considered an opiate and Methadone is a step up from hydrocodone.  Suboxone necessarily isn't.  Apples and oranges.  I took the Suboxone route.  dkwtd....like someone above said, it all depends how much you've taken.  If you were taking them as prescribed, then yeah, Suboxone or any other prescribed medication may not be the best route.  If you abused the hydrocodone or took more than prescribed to you, then something like Suboxone would be worth a try.  Many people have had great experiences using Suboxone to help opiate addiction.  BUT....and this is a huge BUT....if you've never tried to get off hydrocodone before....then obviously you wouldn't know what you will completely feel like.  No matter if you were taking the prescribed amount or abusing them, you will more than likely have some withdrawls....flu like symptoms like explained above.  Cold turkey should always be the clean choice.  Suboxone should be for those who continually relapse because of withdrawls.  What cathy and a couple others explained about the Thomas Recipe and vitamins and such should absolutely be your first option.  If it's your first time doing something like this and you go cold turkey...I wish you the best of luck.  You will absolutely feel better within a few days...maybe even as little as 2 days.  Then all you have to do is put your mind to it and this will never happen to you again.  Good luck and God Bless.

Hey, is there anyone who can watch your daughter during the day for a couple days? Just think of it like you would if you knew that you were really getting the flu and were going to be down for a few days. Alot of times we feel guilty and don't want to get other people to help because we get stuck on how we did this to ourselves and we shouldn't make others do anything for us. If you really had the flu you would work something out. This is way more important than getting over the flu. It's working at getting your life back for you and your family. Do whatever it takes. Taking care of a 4 year old is possible but I'm sure it will increase your anxiety, guilt ect. ect. Be gentle with yourself. Try to stay positive as much as possible. Keep posting.

I saw your response on another post. If you are thinking about Suboxone, contact some of the members that have taken that route and are already off of it. Taking it for Hydro addiction is only jumping to a stronger drug. There are articles under health pages right where the ones Cathy mentioned above. Research this before asking your docter. God bless you in your recovery. Corey

Hi, welcome to the forum. Without knowing how many pills you have been taking it is hard to say exactly how you are going to feel. However, you are going to more than likely have flu like symptoms for 4 to 5 days(pretty standard time frame). I would recommend you go to the store and get some immodium ad as chances are you will need that. Also get plenty of fluids the next few days, Juice/ sports drinks are great. Try to drink as much as ya can to stay hydrated. Bananas are a good thing to eat while going through w/d as they are easy on the stomach and should help with any muscle cramping. Just try to stay positive and in a few days you will be back to normal(even better than normal imo). Keep reading and posting here as much as needed, it will really help to talk to people who have gone through or are going through what you are. If I can be of any more help fell free to PM me.
