what is mega cisterna magna

I just had an MRI done of my brain. All else seems to be normal, except for the mention of a couple of things. MInimum mucosal thickening in the ethmoid air cells, and mega cisterna magna. What does this mean?

This discussion is related to enlarged cisterna magna / prominent posterior fossa cisterns.

I am a little forgetful but that could be because I am taking "serta" a medicine.
I have just had an MRI done. The report reads:

There is hypoplasia of inferior cerebellar vermis with large cisterna magma and no enlargement of posterior fossa.
No focal parenchymal abnormality is detected
What does it mean and is it serious?

Hi,

The ethmoid sinus is one of the paranasal sinuses. Thickening of its mucus membrane indiates chronic sinusitis.

Cisterna magna is one of the three cerebrospinal fluid filled cisterns in the brain, associated with the cerebellum. Mega cisterna magna means one hich is increased. It is sometimes associated with loss of the cerebellar mass or with a space occupying lesion in the brain. If there are no other findings associated, then it is probably a normal variant.

You may discuss further with your neurologist or the doctor who ordered the scan.

Regards,
