nerve damage from a popiliteral nerve block

On February 12, 2009, I had a right ankle scope with debrievement. They did a popiliteral nerve block. The first 2 days I could not move my foot. It finally started to improve, I thought. On the 6th day of post-op, I called my doctor and asked could the feeling like my leg was asleep could be from the cast or the nerve block. They told me to come in and they removed my cast. the doctor stated he does the nerve blocks to keep patients from hurting afterwards. He did state however; that he does not do nerve blocks on football players because of risks of their careers ending from complications of nerve damge from the blocks. He said it could be a big malpratice suit. Why would he tell me that?  It is now 6 weeks since my surgery and I am still having pain from the back of my knee to my foot. The numbess(tingling feeling) is on top and bottom of my foot. The worst is the ball of my foot up to the toes. Also; when I walk it feels like I have been standing on concrete for 24 hours. The whole bottom of the foot hurts like it is bruised or something. I went yesterday and had a EMG, and the doctor performing it said I did indeed have abnormalities from the nerve block. He said my doctor will be contacting me further on this. I originally hurt my ankle in September of 2008 and now I am still having pain from my foot and now this from the nerve damage from the block.  What can I do????

This discussion is related to nerve block for surgery, how long to resolve?.

Unfortunately, I don't have any answers for you (I'm searching for answers myself - for my son who's suffering the after-effects of a nerve block for a lateral meniscus transplant surgery).  Since it's been over 10 years since you posted, I'm curious, how you're doing today?
